GEORGE W. DIXON

George Warner Dixon was born in Aberdeen, SD at St. Luke’s Hospital on April 18, 1950 to Frank and Mary Dixon. George died on January 15, 2012.   He enjoyed his childhood of playing baseball, basketball and riding his bike with his neighborhood buddies.  George was a talented swimmer and won many ribbons in swim meets.  He was an enthusiastic pheasant hunter and he and his dad spent many weekends together finding good places to hunt.  As George said many times, “I was so lucky to have a perfect childhood.”

Every two years the Dixon family would pile into the car for an exciting vacation to some far-away destination.  While these included Miami, New Orleans, Chapel Hill, Washington, New York, Boston, Dallas, Grand Tetons, Denver and Winnipeg,  George’s favorite aspect of these vacations was when the family stayed at a motel with a swimming pool!

Two years ago George suffered from a series of mini-strokes which had a damaging impact on his short-term memory.  At that point he needed to move from living independently to living in the support of Bethesda Home.  George’s family wishes to thank those staff members at Bethesda who were mindful of his circumstance.  Particular thanks to Pastor Vicky Saude-Worthington, Chaplain at Bethesda Home,  for her many respectful conversations with George which he appreciated so much.

George enjoyed visits to Sacramento, CA to visit his sister, Ginny.  While in Sacramento he also enjoyed spending time with a dear family friend, Joe McCarthy who writes, “It was with a heavy heart that I learned of the passing of my dear friend, George Dixon.  In his frequent visits to Sacramento he and I would take some time together.  He liked to go shopping, especially for candy.  He would always choose candy that was sugar-free and, indeed, would bring that to my notice.  You see, George knew that he was my friend, but he also know that I was going to report to Ginny.  His favorite stop was Dairy Queen, where the sugar rules were thrown to the wind.  What went on in Dairy Queen stayed in Dairy Queen.”

“I like to think that George was in this world, but not of this world.  That twinkle in his eye when he would smile reflected an angelic sincerity and purity.  George was asked to carry a heavy burden in life, one that could be frustrating and painful for him at certain times.  He had the devoted love and care of his sisters, Kay and Virginia, especially in recent years.  Now he is reunited with his loving parents, Frank and Mary Dixon, in the blessed joy of heaven where there are no tears and all are forever young in the Lord.  May he rest in peace.” (Joseph McCarthy, M.Div.,M.A.)

Surviving George are his sisters, Virginia L. Dixon of Sacramento, CA and Kay H. Dixon of Minneapolis; his niece, Cheryl Dixon (Alex Ramirez) and children Rosemary, Carolina and Alejandro of Sacramento and his niece Deborah Martisko (Jeremy Bendewald) and daughter, Avery of Aberdeen, SD  George appreciated the kinship of his many cousins and aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family expresses George’s wishes for donations in his memory to Bethesda Home,  1224 South High St., Aberdeen, SD 57401 or to Northeastern Mental Health Center, 703 Southeast 3rd Ave., Aberdeen, SD 5740l.

A memorial service honoring George Warner Dixon will be held during July; an announcement will confirm this by June 30.

George was a wonderful brother and a devoted son.  May heaven bless him with good hunting and many motels with swimming pools.

Most of our lives were spent in a small house on Wells Street that daddy had given to her when still in blueprint form. Together they tiled the floors and painted the walls.

Four of us, the children, survive today.  Lester. Florence Faye, and Glen live in South Dakota. The oldest, Brian, and spouse, Carla, live in and have raised their 8 children in southern California: Analisa, Hollyanna, Christian, Collin, Keenan, Adriana, Bethany, and Cameron. At the time of her passing she had been blessed with 9 great-grandchildren. Analisa (Bruce) has 2 daughters, Hollyanna (Jared) has 2 daughters and 3 sons, Keenan (Koseli) has 1 son, and Adriana (Brian) has 1 daughter. Christian (Marie), Collin (Jana), Bethany, and Cameron have no children to date.

Florence completed an 8th grade education in Alcester and later, in Aberdeen, pursued a typing certificate. She assisted Walter as he operated a mobile ex-ray unit and was employed as a nurse’s aide. She retired from  J.C.Penney store where she was employed in the janitorial department.  She did babysitting. She was a volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program in Aberdeen, assisting in the Boys & Girls Club and in the NSU Day Care Center for more than a decade.

As Walter was ill and required hospitalization periodically during their life together, she was at times left alone in difficult times to contend with often very difficult circumstances  in particular in New Mexico during the 1950s, far from any family or friends, her faith sustaining her. As the oldest child, Brian observed, “She endured with humility and steadfastness trials that would have defeated the strongest among us. She always put others and especially her children, first. She was sometimes slow to decide, but she was also slow to anger and always saw the good in others.” Indeed, she did.

EZRA “ART” GRIEPP

Ezra Arthur Griepp, 88, a longtime resident of Aberdeen and Watertown went to be with his Lord Thursday, December 22, 2011 following months of declining health.  The family will have a private committal service on Tuesday, December 27 at 3:00 PM at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, SD.  A public memorial service will be Wednesday, December 28 at 2:00 PM at First Assembly of God, Aberdeen, SD.

Art was born October 11, 1923 in Bonduel, Wisconsin to Arthur and Emma (Stern) Griepp, and was the first of nine children.

Art grew up near Glad Valley, South Dakota where his parents broke the land and homesteaded a farm.  They moved to Sisseton, SD where he graduated from high school. After graduation, Art enrolled in technical school in Rapid City, SD. He later enlisted as a Sea Bee. In the Navy, he qualified for Officer’s Training School and attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

In 1947 Art returned to South Dakota where he met and married Verna Mary Bolhouse, his wife of 63 years.  They were married on May 14, 1948, the day that Israel became a nation.  He began his career with Midland National Life in Watertown as an insurance agent.

A committed Christian, Art and his family faithfully worshiped at the Watertown Assembly of God, where he served as a deacon.

In 1965, Art moved his family to Aberdeen to manage the Ed Downs Agency, later known as the Griepp-Iwerks Agency. A gifted salesman, Art held the top spot in Midland’s ‘App-A-Week’ national sales program for many years, and was one of Midland’s longest tenured agents.

Art’s business career, however, was always secondary to his family and his relationship with God. Having been raised in a Christian home as a boy by parents who valued reading God’s Word and times of family prayer, Art followed them in his commitment to the Lord. Each day as an adult, he would ask God for strength and wisdom, along with opportunities to share the Gospel with others through his work and many acquaintances. Like his parents, he was vigilant in prayer and leading his family in evening devotions. Throughout his life Art treasured his salvation, wanting others to find forgiveness and experience the new life in Christ he so enjoyed.

Art was a devoted member of Aberdeen’s First Assembly of God, where he worshiped and served on the board for many years. He also served as secretary of the Assemblies of God South Dakota District Men’s Fellowship and was instrumental in raising funds to begin a church in Brookings, and to raise financial assistance for pastors of small South Dakota churches. He was a member of Aberdeen’s Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship and served as the chairman for approximately10 years. Art served on advisory committees and boards for Trinity Bible College in Ellendale and Central Indian Bible College in Mobridge. He was also a member of the Evangel College Councilmen, and the Aberdeen Sunrise Kiwanis.

Though he was not certified as a pastor, Art’s love for God and heart for the elderly propelled him to organize and hold Sunday morning worship services for residents at the Aberdeen Living Center for several years.

In his leisure time, Art enjoyed reading, trading cars, boating, camping, doing household repairs, attending family Bible camp, family reunions, hunting with family and friends, traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren, and spending time with his beloved wife Verna.

Art will be remembered by his family for his firm guiding fatherly love, his humor, kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to Christ.

Art is survived by his wife Verna, his daughter Bobbie Ekanger (Ted) of Aberdeen, and his three sons: Doug Griepp, Stockton, CA, Roger Griepp (Sue) of Peoria, AZ, and Rick Griepp (Cherie) of Springfield, MO.

He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, Talmage Ekanger (Aberdeen), Trevor Ekanger (Springfield, MO), January Harless, D.J. Griepp,  Jeffrey Griepp (all from Riverbank, California), Matthew Griepp (Mesa, AZ), Nathan Griepp (Ozark, MO), Alyssa Griepp, and Autumn Griepp (both from Springfield, MO) and 9 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by seven siblings: Aaron Griepp (Watertown, SD), Wilma Mastley (Elk River, MN), Marion Golden (Hot Springs, AR), James Griepp (Cypress, TX), Allen Griepp (Watertown, SD), David Griepp (Hopkins, MN), and Alice Schlotte (Cokato, MN). Art is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Emma Griepp of Watertown, and one brother, Phil Griepp formerly of Osseo, MN.

The family wishes to express special appreciation to Art and Verna’s home church and friends at First Assembly of God in Aberdeen, and their friends and caring staff of Primrose Independent Living Center, and more recently the Primrose Cottages where Verna still resides.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Gideon Bible Society.

CLEMENT BECKER

The Mass of Christian Burial for Clement Becker, 91, of Aberdeen, formerly Turton, SD, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Father Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant.  Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.   Clement died Monday, October 31, at Primrose Cottages, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Thursday, November 3, with family present from 5-7, followed by a wake service at 7. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Our dad, Clement Louis Becker was born February 7, 1920 in Turton, South Dakota to Frank and Esther (Bassett) Becker.  He was the youngest of four children.

When dad was eleven, his family moved to the family farm – three miles south and three and one half miles west of Turton.

Dad attended high school in Turton, graduating with the class of 1939.

He married Ramona Carlson of Brentford in 1950.  They lived on the family farm until 1956 when they moved into Turton.

Dad was a farmer as well as a Standard Oil Agent.  As dad tells it, “he was combining eight bushel barley when he was approached by two men from Standard Oil to work for them.”  Dad recalled that it was the best decision he ever made.

In 1976 he purchased the business and it became Becker Oil.  Kids in the area loved seeing dad and his gas truck.  Tootsie pops were plentiful for all the kids!  These were our growing years!  The three of us have great memories of that gas truck.

In 1981 our mother, Ramona, passed away from leukemia.

Dad continued to do business for over 40 years.  In 1996 a celebration was held for his retirement.

Dad moved from his home to Ash Street apartments in Turton.  Never did he want to be away from Turton.  He continued to drive the streets of Turton until the age of 88.

In 2009 he moved to Aberdeen to Primrose Place and later Primrose Cottages.

Dad loved dogs, hunting pheasants, the Twins, popcorn, and driving the countryside “checking up” on things. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Turton.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Aberdeen and was a member of Independent Oil Dealers.

Dad never knew a stranger.  Each person he met was like an old dear friend.

We are grateful to have had the wonderful dad we did.  We learned lessons of faith, honesty, integrity, and hope from our dad.  We mourn dad’s passing, but know that his earthly body was tired.  His new life in heaven has just begun.  What joy we have in that!

Surviving Clem are: Cheryl (Jim) Sayers, Humboldt, Iowa, Myrna Becker, Rapid City, and David (Brenda) Becker, Aberdeen, as well as his grandchildren, Jeanny, Kathleen, and Tavis Becker, McKenzie Becker Johnson and Kate and Cody Sayers.

Preceding Clem in death were his wife, Ramona, his parents, Frank and Esther Becker, his sister Rita, and brothers Ray and Willard.

The family prefers memorials to North Plains Hospice.

EMMA BIEL

A remarkable lady was called home to rest on Friday, October 22, 2011, at the age of 106½.  The funeral service for Emma Biel will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 26 at the Selby United Church of Christ, Pastor Mary Lou Gruebele officiating.  Burial following at Selby Memorial Gardens, Selby, SD.

Visitation will be from 4-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, at the church in Selby.  Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111, S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Emma Knopp was born to Daniel and Marie (Klembitz) Knopp February 20, 1905 at the farm home south of Bowdle, SD.  When Emma was three years old, her mother died leaving the care of six children to her father who had promised to keep the family together.

In 1911, at the age of six, the family moved to a farm north of Java, SD and in 1917 they moved to a place 18 miles north of Isabel, SD.  Here they lived in a small sod house built by her father with Emma and her sisters helping by mixing straw into the gumbo by tromping in it with bare feet.

Emma did not have an easy childhood, only hard work. Emma and her younger sister herded cattle on horse back, pumped water by hand for the livestock and gathered cow chips for the cook stove.

Her father didn’t believe in the value of an education so they only attended the country school a few months during the school year.  When an aunt came to visit, she insisted the children needed to be in school.  So in 1921, they moved back to Java.  Having missed so much school, Emma was 15 years old and in the 5th grade, but her teacher told her if she worked hard, she would promote her to the 7th grade and she did.

During the summer she worked for Rose and George Bender, she met Fred G. Biel.  They got married December 24, 1924 and a year later, Genevieve was born.  The Benders then sent Emma to Minneapolis to attend Beauty School and they kept Genny.  After graduating, she came back to operate her own Beauty Shop in Bowdle.  In 1928, they welcomed baby boy, Warren, to the family.

In the early 1930s, the family moved to Mound City, SD where Fred got a job with the Highway Department and Emma worked in the homes of various people.  Times were hard, for this was the period of the depression and the “Dirty 30s.”  About 1942, Fred went to Alaska to work on the Alcan Highway project for better wages.  Emma moved the family to Aberdeen where she again worked for other people.  When Fred came back from Alaska they moved to Selby, SD.  She lost her son, Warren, in 1950, who was only 21 years old and her husband, Fred, in 1959.  Emma moved to Aberdeen and devoted herself to helping others, working until she was in her 80s.  She lived on her own until the age of 99 when she fell and fractured her hip and then moved into Primrose Assisted Living.  In 2008 at the age of 103 she moved to Selby Good Samaritan Center.

Emma enjoyed helping others, cooking and baking, reading, Word Scrambles in the newspaper, playing cards, crocheting and read the Holy Bible in its entirety three times.  She was a loyal and active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Aberdeen.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Genevieve and Leo Allmendinger, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and five great great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Warren, her parents, four sisters and one brother.

She will always be remembered as one remarkable lady and an inspiration to all.
