Obituaries

 

RAYMOND H. JONES

Funeral service for Raymond H. Jones, 95, of Aberdeen will be 11:00am, Friday, September 3, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Chris Anderson and Pastor Vicki Saude-Worthington will officiate. Burial will be in the Houghton Cemetery with military graveside rites by Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 of Columbia.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 4:00-7:00pm with family present at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Raymond H. Jones was born July 27, 1915 to Hugh Owen Jones and Clara Grace Lange Jones in Houghton, SD.  He passed away on August 30, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.  

He received his education at Houghton Grade School and graduated from Houghton/Hecla High School in 1933.  In 1939 he graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BS Degree in Business.  He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

Raymond was called to Active Duty with the US Army Air Force from Sept. 4th, 1941 to April 10, 1946.  He retired after 30 years as Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force Reserve.  On June 8, 1943 he married Irene E Hanson in the Scandinavia Lutheran Church in Bath, SD.

He as a member of the Good Sam Travel Club, Aberdeen, SD and they took many bus trips with the Aberdeen Senior Center.

Raymond retired from farming in 1988 after 35 years and moved to Aberdeen.

He worked for ASCS part-time for 26 years as a grain and land inspector.

Raymond served in various offices of Trinity Lutheran Church in Houghton, SD. 

Raymond was Clerk of Lansing Township for many years and a member of the American Legion, Columbia, SD.

Raymond enjoyed reading and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Irene E. Hanson Jones, one daughter Karen (Gene) Oleson of Rapid City, SD, two sons Howard (Sandra) Jones of Reston, VA and Stewart (Valerie) Jones of Aberdeen, SD  One sister Helen Ryan of Porter, Indiana and seven Grandsons Kendall (Colleen) Pfutzenreuter , McKinney, TX, Gregory Jones Newport Beach, CA, Stephan Jones, Reston, VA, Douglas Jones, Reston, Va., Mitchel Jones, Aberdeen, SD, Noah Jones, Aberdeen, SD, Isaac Jones, Aberdeen, SD, and two great grandchildren, Ty and Tatum Pfutzenreuter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Janet Kay Jones and granddaughter Rachel Marie Jones.

MARVIN KOTH

The funeral service for Marvin Koth, 87, Aberdeen, will be at 10am Thursday September 2nd, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend James Clarke officiating.  Burial and military rites by Sidney L. Smith Post #24 will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Marvin died Friday, August 27, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Wednesday September 1st, at Spitzer Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Marvin Koth was born September 14, 1922 on the family farm in McIntosh County, ND to Gideon and Christine (Hauff) Koth. When he was 2 years old the family moved to Fredonia, ND where he spent his childhood, moving to Aberdeen, SD in 1940. Marv worked at Hub Recreation and Swift and Company for a short time before being hired by K.O. Lee Company in April 1941 where he retired from his position as shipping department manager in 1987.

Koth was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force at Ft. Snelling, MN and went to Lincoln Air Base where he received basic training. In October 1943 he was transferred to Lowry Air Base in Denver for gunnery school. In January 1944 he was transferred to Camp Kilmer, NJ and then sailed on the Queen Elizabeth to England to join the Eighth Air Force. The ship crossed the North Atlantic carrying 18,000 men and women bound for Glasgow, Scotland. What a rough ride it was with waves 40-50 feet high. From Glasgow, they traveled by train to the 4th Strategic Air Base about 50 miles north of London. Marv attained the rank of Corporal and was in charge of the base transportation office for 1 1/2 years. When the war ended, he left Southampton, England and returned to Norfolk, VA. From there he traveled to Camp McCoy, WI and returned home on a 36-day furlough. He was awarded medals for Good Conduct, European African Middle Eastern Service and the World War II Victory Medal, and Carbine Sharp Shooter Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1945 while stationed at the Sioux Falls Air Base.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gladys M. (Lee) Koth of Aberdeen and only son, Ronald M. Koth and his wife, Joyce of Rapid City, and grandsons Dr. Sam L. Koth and his wife, Katy of Rock Valley, IA and Karl R. Koth, of Rapid City, SD.

Marv always loved the great outdoors and was able to hunt and fish for nearly 61 years until he developed macular degeneration. He was a great storyteller and was fond of recounting his hunting adventures with Cliff and Karl Lee as well as those with his son and grandsons. Marv also liked traveling and was able to visit every continent with his wife, Glady.

Marvin was preceded in death by his father in 1943, mother in 1984, and 3 siblings: Elmer of Seattle, Albert of Sioux City and Ida of Langford, SD. 

Marv was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over fifty years, and a member of the Sydney L. Smith Post No. 24 of the American Legion for over 60 years, and BPOE Elks Lodge 1046 for 40 years.

LES G. GROSZ

The funeral service for Les G. Grosz, 87, Aberdeen, will be at 10:00am, Friday, September 3, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tom Haggar. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Les died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Angelhaus Regional Basic Care Center.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Thursday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Les Grosz was born January 19, 1923 at Bowdle, SD to Fred G. and Theo (Jones) Grosz. He graduated from Bowdle High School in 1941 and attended Mankato Business College. He served  11 months as an aviation cadet in the US Navy followed by 27 months in the Army Air Force in WWII.

He married Marcy Mashek May 16, 1944 at Lowry Field Chapel in Denver. He began his banking career with the Bowdle State Bank in 1941. In 1955, he accepted a position with the newly chartered Farmers & Merchants Bank in Aberdeen, where he served as Vice President and Director until 1965, when he transferred to the Affiliated Security Bank in Webster as its President. He joined the Bremer Bank Group in 1972, assuming the President’s position at Farmers & Merchant State Bank in Breckenridge, MN. He transferred to the First American Bank & Trust in Marshall, MN in 1978, where he remained President until retiring the end of 1985.

He was an active member of Lions International for thirty-three years, serving as President of the Aberdeen Lions Club and Charter President of the Webster Lions Club. In 1970/71, he served as District Governor of Lions District 5SE, followed as Chairman of the board of governors of Multiple District 5. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of many organizations. He was a past President of the Webster Chamber of Commerce, Aberdeen Chapter AIB, several United Way Chapters, and Past Commander of the American Legion and a three year director of the Minnesota Banks Association. He became a Certified Instructor of AARP 55 Alive/Mature Driving in 1992 and instructed many classes in Aberdeen and surrounding communities.

He was a member of the Herbert McKennett Post 40 of the American Legion in Webster, American Association of Retired Persons and the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, at the time of his death.

Grateful for having shared Les’ life are his wife Jan, Aberdeen, two sons, Peter (Kelly), Stacy, MN, Chris, Waubay, daughter-in-law, Darlyce Grosz, grandchildren, Terisa (Iordan) Batchvarov, Daniel (Jessica) Grosz and Derek Dovolos, four great grandchildren, all of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marcy, a son David, parents and one sister.

The family prefers memorials to First United Methodist Church, 502 S. Lincoln St., Aberdeen.

DARLENE MARIE NIEDERMAN

The funeral service for Darlene Marie Niederman, 67, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Monday, August 30, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Pastor Eldon Reich officiating.  Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.  Darlene died Wednesday, August 25,  at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.   

Visitation will be from 2-7pm Sunday, August 29, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Darlene Marie Niederman was born on March 30, 1943 to Edward and Louise (Mollman) Niederman at Mobridge, SD.  She attended elementary school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Lemmon and went to Lemmon High School. 

Over the years, Darlene held various jobs.  She was a cocktail waitress and a bartender in Aberdeen.  Darlene also worked as a truck driver for a time. For many years, she worked as a cook at several area restaurants including the Blue Buffalo and The Lumber Company. 

Darlene was a member of First United Methodist Church and AARP.  Darlene enjoyed reading and especially liked Western novels.  She liked to be outdoors whether gardening, camping or just relaxing.  Darlene was a self-taught painter and was also an avid seamstress.  Her friends and family will remember her talent at cooking.  She was known for her pies and also the “goodie” trays she would make for Christmas.  In 2009 she made 48 different items.  Darlene spent many summer days going to rummage sales with her friends.  She had a very gentle and loving spirit.  Darlene was also generous, always willing to give to others her time and resources.  She loved to spend time with family and friends and especially loved time spent with her grandchildren. 

Grateful for having shared Darlene’s life are her daughter, Audi (Johan) Verwey and their children, Tallon Everson and Ashten Verwey, her son, Brian Niederman, all of Aberdeen, sister, Mary Ellen Baumgarten and her family, step-daughter, Trisha (Cal) Samborski and their family, step-daughter Marianne Kilian and her family, step-son Terry Kilian and his family. 

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents Edward & Louise Niederman, her long time companion Keith Kilian, her step-grandson Tommy Blaire, great nephew Riley Baumgarten and daughter-in-heart Bernice Spraw.

MARVIN RAY GRAVES

Funeral service for Marvin Ray Graves, 85, of Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen with a flag presentation by Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 of Columbia. Pastor Loren Leonard will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Marvin died Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the Primrose Cottages at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1:00pm-7:00pm Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home at Aberdeen.

Marvin Ray Graves was born on April 30, 1925 at Andover, SD to William and Reva (Poe) Graves. He attended country school in Andover for two years. The family then moved to a farm north of Columbia, SD in 1933. He attended school, assisted with farm work and played baseball for the junior legion in the surrounding areas. He was scouted out and contracted to play for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team as a pitcher.

Marvin enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. Upon his discharge he returned to the Columbia and Frederick area and engaged in farming.

Marvin married Adeline Miller and later attended Springfield State Teachers College in Springfield, SD, obtaining a degree in auto mechanics. They moved to Kadoka, SD where he worked until returning to Aberdeen in 1959. He then worked at the John Wheeting Mink Farm at Bath, SD for 10 enjoyable years.

After the mink farm closed he became a custodian at Bethesda Nursing Home. His wife Adeline passed away on February 4, 1971.

Marvin accepted a head custodian position at Holgate Junior High School and worked there until his retirement in 1986. He married Dorothy Bergh.

Marvin enjoyed working in his yard, roses and gardening. His pride and joy was his three miniature dachshund’s dogs named Carmel. He was a member of Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 at Columbia for over 50 years.

Grateful for having shared Marvin’s life are two nephews, Glenn (Charlotte) Graves of Frederick and Ronald (Joanne) Graves of Cresbard, great nieces Reva and Renee Graves, Jodi (Mike) Bird, great nephew Brett (Lisa) Graves, great great nieces, Mackenzie Bird, Ella and Madeline Graves, great great nephews, Mason Graves and Tucker Bird, three step children, Merle Miller, Georgia (David) Meyer and Rodney Bergh, two step grandchildren, Bart (Tricia) Uhlir and Beth (Chris) Feddersen and one sister in law Esther Graves.

Marvin was precede in death by his parents, wife Adeline, one step daughter Jeanne (Stanton) Uhlir and one brother Robert Graves.

VAUGHN L. BIERMAN

The Memorial Service for Vaughn L. Bierman, 64, of Aberdeen will be 11:00 am Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith Legion Post #24. Vaughn died from a stroke Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen. Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vaughn Leslie Bierman was born June 22nd, 1946 to Oscar and Elsie (Ghylin) Bierman in Aberdeen SD.  He grew up in Chelsea SD, and attended and graduated high school in Northville SD.  Vaughn was married to Karen Walker from 1968 to 1991.  Two children were added to this union.

Vaughn served six years in the Army National Guard 147th Battalion of Redfield SD.

He was self employed in recycling scrap metal before illness caused an early retirement in November of 2006.  Vaughn loved baseball, hunting and fishing and above all, his grandchildren.

Grateful for sharing Vaughn’s life are daughter Laurie (Dan) Hanisch of Brandon SD, son Chad (Sandra) Bierman of Aberdeen, brother Gaylen (Bonnie) Bierman of Sedro Woolley WA, sister Lois M. Abel of Aberdeen, brother Lloyd M. Bierman of Aberdeen, former spouse Karen Buss of Aberdeen and five grandchildren, Mitch, Hailey and Brooke Hanisch and Sidney and McKenzie Bierman.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Joshua Ryan Abel.

DOROTHY MARIE DE ROOS

The funeral service for Dorothy Marie De Roos, 93, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Thursday, August 19, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Aberdeen with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery at Springfield, SD. Dorothy went to be with her Lord Sunday, August 15, 2010 just three days short of her 94th birthday at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm, Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Dorothy Marie (Wynia) De Roos was born in Springfield, SD on August 18, 1916 to Albert and Jacoba (Risseeuw) Wynia. Dorothy grew up on farms in the Tyndall and Springfield areas. She attended Lincoln School #38 through the 8th grade and then worked on the family farm as a hired hand.

In 1938, Dorothy married Frank L. De Roos and because of hard times they honeymooned in the Black Hills with two other couples.

They began married life at the Bon Homme colony.

They had three children, Karen, Marilyn, and Allen. During this time, Dorothy and Frank moved back to Springfield where they ran the creamery called FRANK AND DOT’S. They also lived in Fort Randall, Provo, and Columbia, SD. At Columbia, Dorothy started cooking in the school, and also sold AVON products.

In 1963, Karen was killed in a car accident.  Dorothy and Frank then adopted Karen’s son, Lance.

Dorothy always focused on her family and always enjoyed going hunting, fishing, camping, rock hunting, and traveling. Frank and Dorothy also lived in Barnard, Selby and James Valley where Frank taught school. Dorothy and Frank lived in Huron for a number of years where she cooked for Huron High School. 

Frank was diagnosed with Alzherimer’s disease shortly after their 50th Wedding Anniversary and passed away two years later.

Dorothy continued to cook at the Huron Senior Center and completed her GED in1994.  She then worked at Reedy Business Supply, made and sold a variety of crafts at craft shows with her daughter Marilyn, and attended as many games and activities as possible of her grand children and great grand children until the last five years when she resided at the Aberdeen Health and Rehab Center.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Marilyn (Dennis) Tople of Mellette; Allen (Jane) De Roos of Miller; Lance (Nancy) De Roos of Sioux Falls, one brother, Howard (Dorris) Wynia, Springfield; two sisters, Leona Dumdei and Janice Wynia, Sioux Falls. 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Frank; her daughter Karen, her parents Albert and Jacoba, and one sister Mable.

MARIANNE MCCALLUM STENVIG

Funeral services for Marianne McCallum Stenvig, 62, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Friday, August 20, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with her soul sister, Beth Smith officiating.  Marianne died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD after a brief illness.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Thursday at the funeral home.

The family requests donations to the South Dakota Nurses Foundation where a scholarship will be created in her memory.

Marianne was born November 3, 1947 to Rob Roy and Helen Mary (Ryan) McCallum at St. John’s, Newfoundland where her father was stationed with the U.S. Army Air Corps. By virtue of her Canadian birth, her parents dubbed her “Goofy Noofy”, a nickname family and friends continued to use affectionately in her adult life. Her family settled in Atwater, CA where she attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Grade School and Atwater High School, graduating in 1965.

After earning a cosmetology certificate, Marianne attended East Los Angeles Community College and became a registered respiratory therapist while the field was still new. After working in southern California for several years, she followed her dreams and embarked on an adventure, moving to Oahu, Hawaii where she was employed as a civilian at Tripler Army Medical Center. Here she met her husband Tom, who was stationed at Tripler in the Army Nurse Corps. They were married November 6, 1976, in Kahaluu, Hawaii in an outdoor ceremony on the windward side of Oahu.

Marianne and Tom followed Tom’s employment with the Indian Health Service and lived in Shiprock, New Mexico, and Rapid City, South Dakota before settling in Aberdeen in 1979. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen as a respiratory therapist for several years before earning a business degree from Northern State University and becoming a licensed nursing home administrator for Manor Care in Aberdeen. In 1993 she started a personal care product business named Good Nature with her close friend Velna Hart and also became involved with the restaurant and catering business at the Ward Hotel. She eventually became owner of the restaurant and renamed it Alonzo’s after Alonzo Ward who had built the hotel. During these years she was active in political, civic and community life, running for city commission and serving on the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce, including a term as Chamber President. After Alonzo’s closed, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and devoting her creative talents to preparing spectacular meals for family and friends.  

Marianne had a big heart and was always willing to help others She was a consummate chef, and her culinary expertise will be remembered and missed by many. She enjoyed traveling, all things Hawaiian, the occasional practical joke, reading, and especially spending weekends at the cabin at Elm Lake with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Marianne’s life are her husband, Tom Stenvig, daughters, Annie Stenvig, Kari (Steve) Stickelmyer, Alexa Stenvig, grandchildren, Thomas Norman and Anna Laurel Stickelmyer all of Aberdeen, and brother, Donald (Barbara) McCallum, Sacramento, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rob and Helen McCallum and brother, Robert McCallum.

EARL “MAC” MCCULLOCH

The funeral service for Earl “Mac” McCulloch, 81, Aberdeen, is 2:30pm, Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational UCC, with Pastor Vicki Saude-Worthington officiating. Burial will be at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick, SD. Mac died Wednesday, August 11, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation is 3-7pm, Friday, with a prayer service at 7pm, at Plymouth Congregational UCC.

Earl “Mac” Winfield McCulloch was born to Earl & Sylvia (Shook) McCulloch on February 1, 1929 in Aberdeen, SD. He grew up in Franklyn Township, west of Barnard, SD. Mac attended country school for eight years and graduated from Barnard High School. He worked with his dad on the farm, raising livestock, and took over the farm when they retired.

Mac married Carol Heagley on August 22, 1954 in Aberdeen. They lived on the farm until 1992, when they moved to Westport.

Mac was a 4-H leader for the Barnard Go Getters and helped coach the Frederick Blues girl’s softball team.  He served on the Franklyn Township Board and the Barnard Co-op elevator board. Mac was a supervisor for the Brown-Marshall Conservation District for twenty-nine years. He drove school bus for Elm Valley School District from 1978-2003.

Mac was a member of Barnard UCC and a past member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed all sports and snowmobiling.  Mac was an avid  hunter, fisherman, and also enjoyed cooking.  Mac was a good natured man who deeply touched the lives of those around him. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor.  Mac truly loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.

The family wishes  to extend a special thank you to the loving staff at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen for their wonderful care.

PEARL CHRISTINE STOLLE

The funeral service for Pearl Christine Stolle, 98, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 11am, Saturday, August 14, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla, with Pastor Jay Haaland officiating.  Burial will be at Hecla City Cemetery. Pearl died Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Sioux Falls Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. 

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Friday, August 13, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Pearl Christine Oltman was born on July 25, 1912 to Carl Henry and Amelia Marie (Schuelein) Oltman at Welcome, MN.  Her family moved to Hecla when she was in 2nd grade.  Pearl attended school in Hecla, graduating from Hecla High School.  When her father Carl died, Pearl worked as a book keeper at the Elevator in Hecla.  Pearl then attended Northern State Teacher’s College and received her Teacher’s Degree. After receiving her education, Pearl worked for several years as a teacher in country schools in the Liberty area.

On June 20, 1935, Pearl married Donald “Butch” Stolle at Hecla, SD.  They made their home in a little house north of the Standard Gas Station in Hecla.  Together they managed the station and eventually moved into the gas station.  Pearl took care of all of the book work for the station and Butch provided the service.  Butch died September 28, 1996.  Pearl continued to make Hecla her home until moving to Aberdeen in 2004.  She lived in Bethesda Towne Square and moved to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen for a short time. 

Pearl was  a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla, where she played for many years as the church organist.  Playing Bridge and Whist were favorite pass times of Pearls.  She enjoyed cooking and always had food and coffee for anyone who would stop by to visit.  Pearl and Butch truly had servant’s hearts and were always willing to help those in need.  Though they had no children, they treated all who entered their lives as family. 

Grateful for having shared Pearl’s life are her sister, Helen Newman of Pueblo, CO and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. 

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Butch, her parents, Carl and Amelia, three sisters, Luella Bentley, Rosine Schliebe and June Johnson, and two brothers, Victor Oltman and Robert Oltman.

KEITH SMITH

The funeral service for Keith Smith, 82, of Warner, will be 10:30am, Friday, August 13, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Keith died Monday, August 9, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2-7pm, Thursday, with a prayer service led by Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Keith Smith was born April 22, 1928,  in Aberdeen to Claude & Esther (Hansen) Smith. He was raised on a farm near Mellette and attended school there. Keith was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warner. After his mother’s death, Keith moved to Aberdeen at the age of thirteen. He worked for area farmers while going to school. He operated heavy equipment and drove many miles over the road.

Keith married Shirlee Caskey Spaar on October 5, 1962 at Webster, SD. Together they raised three children, Raymond, and twins, Shelee & Kelee. They made their home in the Warner and Mellette area for most of their lives.

Keith was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  He was also a member of the Elks Lodge. Keith was a very generous and giving man. He loved working in the yard. Keith enjoyed his dogs & cats.

Grateful for having shared Keith’s life are his wife, Shirlee Smith, Warner, son, Raymond (Myrna) Spaar, Webster, daughter, Shelee (Jack) Poirier, Aberdeen, grandchildren, Cassandra Spath, Danielle Spaar, Kristy (Josh) Smith, Hollee Hilla, Lynn Moffenbier, great grandchildren, Marckus Spath, Xaziah Smith, Malakai Smith, special niece & nephew, John & Diane Smith, very special friends, Connie & Butch Kline.

SUSANNA M. BRAMMER

Funeral service for Susanna M. Brammer, 91, of St. Peter, MN and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 1:30 pm, Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Jeff Whillock will officiate.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Susanna died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Monday, August 9, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Susanna Meier, daughter of John and Mabel (Shave) Meier, was born on April 9, 1919 at Lemmon, ND. At a young age, she moved with her family to Loyalton, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Loyalton High School with the class of 1937. Susanna went on to attend Northern Normal and Industrial School where she received her Teaching Certificate. She taught school in Edmunds County for three years prior to moving to Firesteel, SD where she taught at the Firesteel Consolidated School.

She was united in marriage to Hillis Brammer on June 17, 1943 at Neosho, MO. They made their first home in Carthage, MO and in 1945 moved to Britton, SD, before settling in Aberdeen in 1950.  This is where they raised their family and remained for many years. Susanna’s beloved husband passed away on May 5, 1997. In 2008, she moved to St. Peter, MN to be close to her family.  

Susanna was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. For many years she was active in the Women of the E.L.C.A. as well as the Piecemakers. Susanna was a past member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Educational Church Council and also taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children Arlen Brammer of Denver, CO, Anna (Jerry) Westphal of Two Rivers, WI, Linda Brammer of Minneapolis, MN and Leila Brammer of St. Peter, MN, granddaughters Rebecca (Marcus) McCleery and Natalie Brammer and one sister Ruth Hamilton.

Susanna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Adele Taylor and granddaughter Noelle Westphal.

LAURA FLEMMER

The funeral service for Laura Flemmer, 89, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating.  Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.  Laura died Wednesday, August 4 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Laura Maier was born on July 25, 1921 at Long Lake, SD to Jacob and Martha (Preszler) Maier.  This is the area where she grew up and attended school.  They moved to Leola and later she moved to Aberdeen.  In December 1946 she married Alvin Flemmer at Webster and they made their home in Aberdeen.  Laura worked for Nash Finch Company until she retired in 1978.  She continued to make Aberdeen her home.

Laura was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Aberdeen and the Eagle’s Club.  Laura took great pride in her home and enjoyed working in her yard.  She loved playing cards, pool and fishing.

Grateful for having shared Laura’s life are her son, Al (Marilyn) Flemmer of Aberdeen, granddaughters, Angela (Jason) Dickhaut, and their daughters, Taylor and Stephanie of Grand Priarie, TX, Stacy (Mike) Ramsdell of Richlands, NC,  sister, Ella Jones of Dickinson, ND, special nieces, Shirley (Ken) Rieger, Sandy (Mike) Storley and other nieces and nephews.

 Laura is preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, sisters, Leona Coleman and Margie Brown.

JON ARLEN SMALLEY

Memorial service for Jon Arlen Smalley, 70, of Columbia, SD will be 10:30am, Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the American Legion Hall at Columbia. Pastor Shelia Apland-Ottenbacher will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery at Columbia. Jon died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Covington Heights at Sioux Falls, SD.

Jon Arlen Smalley was born August 6, 1939 to Ward and Orene (Laurence) Smalley in Aberdeen, SD.  The family lived west of Frederick.  In 1941 they moved west of Barnard where he received his education.  After graduating from Barnard High School in 1958 he farmed with his father for a couple of years.  He then moved to California where he worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft.  On June 28, 1962 he married Kathy Hart in California.  Later he worked for Dew Container and in 1975 he joined his brother, Gene to form the Smalley Brothers business making steel rule cutting die’s.  Later it became Jon Smalley and Sons, which is now operated by his sons.  Jon retired in 1990 and in 2001 he moved to Columbia.   

Jon was a member of  the United Church of Christ, Columbia.   

Grateful for having shared Jon’s life are his children, Joseph (Kim) Smalley, Ward Smalley, II, Nona Smalley, Jason (Teresa) Smalley, Jud (Heather) Smalley, all of California and Jonielle Smalley, Columbia, grandchildren, Shauntell, Traci (Craig), Jeremy, Chelsea, Levi, Geena, Jill, Jason, II, Christian and Brandon, great grandchildren, Alyssa, Brooklyn, Owen and Kaycee, sisters, Beverly (Frank) DiPietro, Merry (Marvin) Kalt, Angela (George) Whitaker, Cozette (Al) Wolff, Joan Delight Henry, Lynne (Larry) Wampler, brother, Ward (Lila) Smalley, several nieces and nephews.

BEVERLY ROSE CRAMPTON

The funeral service for Beverly Rose Crampton, 83, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Beverly died Sunday, August 1, at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 9am until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Beverly Crampton was born April 12, 1927 in Hecla, SD to Charles and Vera (Hines) Estee.  She graduated from Hecla High School and then attended Northern State College.  She then worked for the First National Bank of Hecla from 1946-1949.  She married Donald Crampton on July 2, 1949 in Webster, SD.  She worked for First National Bank of Aberdeen from 1950-1951 and then K.O. Lee Company from 1953-1955.  She then stayed at home and raised her children.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Donald, and brother William. 

Grateful for having shared Beverly’s life are two daughters Lynn Chaney (Dew) of Ft. Scott, KS and Brenda Piatz (Greg) of Eagan, MN;  grandson, Daniel Piatz of Eagan, MN; sister Eleanor Osher of Bettendorf, IA; her brother Charles Estee of Vermillion, SD and niece Dori (Wayne) Anderson of Aberdeen, SD.

LLOYD W. PIGORS

Funeral service for Lloyd W. Pigors, 84, Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Friday, August 6, 2010 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Jais Tinglund and Pastor Lloyd Redhage will officiate. Burial will be at Ferney Lutheran Cemetery, Ferney, SD. Lloyd passed away peacefully Monday morning, August 2, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen after suffering a stroke at his home the prior week.

Visitation will be from 1-7:30pm, Thursday, August 5, with a prayer service at 7:30pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Lloyd William Pigors was born on February 4, 1926 on the Pigors family farmstead 4 miles east of Ferney, SD. This is the area where he grew up and attended the area school.

He was baptized, confirmed, and a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ferney.  He enjoyed serving the Lord as a church elder, choir member, Sunday school teacher and was the chairmen of the congregation when the new church was built in 1962.

Graduating from Groton High School in 1944, he started farming with his father William.

On June 5, 1949 he married Muriel Ihde of Warner at the Ferney church. They made their home on the family farm until they moved to Aberdeen in 1991. He enjoyed farming and continued to stay active in the family farming operations for years to come.

After moving to Aberdeen, Lloyd became a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder.

Lloyd was active in education, serving on school boards at Prairie Pride School, Ferney School and the Groton School District.

In 1955, Lloyd bought his first speed boat and enjoyed taking his family on boat rides and water skiing, mastering the slalom.  In their later years, Lloyd and Muriel started RVing spending the better part of the winter in Mesa, Arizona and Sacramento, CA.  They enjoyed their travels visiting all 50 states as well as abroad.  He was a member of the Hub City Sams camping club and the Belles and Beaux Square Dance club.

Lloyd enjoyed attending and watching his growing family’s activities.  He will be greatly missed by Muriel, his children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Lloyd’s life are his wife of 61 years, Muriel; children, David Pigors, Groton, Bill (LuAnn) Pigors, Rocklin,CA, Tamara (Wayne) Cramer, Huron, SD; daughter-in-law Cindy Pigors, Aberdeen; grandchildren, Jessica (Matt) DeMarrias, Lon (Sarah) Pigors, James Pigors, Erin Hovland, Amy (Darren Thorsteinson) Cramer, John (Kyleigh) Cramer, Mark Cramer, Anna Cramer, Paul Cramer; great-grandchildren, Laura, Kaydence, Zoey, Emerson, and Easton.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, William and Meta Pigors; son Lon LeRoy Pigors; brothers Wayne and Leonard Pigors and sister Delores Schwarting, and grandson in-law Dan Hovland.

Casket bearers will be all his grandchildren. Memorials may be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ferney.

As a farmer, Lloyd enjoyed harvesting the fruits of the earth through his entire life.  The seeds he planted of love and life will live in our hearts forever.

RUTH RISAGER

The funeral service for Ruth Risager, 88 of Aberdeen will be 10am Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen.  Ruth died Friday July 30th, 2010 at Bethesda Home, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-7pm Monday, August 2, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Ruth Clementson was born on September 20, 1921 to Martin and Marie (Amundson) Clementson in rural Union County, near Elk Point, SD.  She was Baptized and Confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point.  This is where she grew up and attended rural school. Ruth graduated from Elk Point High School in 1939. 

Ruth was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Aberdeen since April 14, 1957.  Ruth had a gentle and kind spirit.  She loved her family and especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Ruth’s life are her son, Gregg (Brenda) Risager of Aberdeen, daughter-in-law, Sandy (Kerry) Swingler of Aberdeen, four grandchildren, Jordan Risager, Eian Risager, Tiffany (Nick) Peterson, and Jessica Risager, and four great grandchildren, Kraityn, Reece, Brady, and Preston Peterson.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, one son, Steven, parents, Martin and Marie, three sisters and two brothers.

ANNA HIEB

The funeral service for Anna Hieb, 84 of Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.  Anna died Friday July 30th, 2010 at Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm, Monday, August 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.  

Anna (Obenauer) Hieb was born December 18, 1925 to Emil and Magdalena (Scheuffele) Obenauer near Eureka, SD.  She grew up on a farm by Ashley, ND. 

Anna married Fred Hieb on April 8, 1951 in Long Lake, SD.  The beginning of their married life was spent working and living on various farms in McPherson County.  In 1965, they bought The East End Café in Pierpont, SD which they operated until 1969 when they moved to Webster, SD. In Webster, Anna worked at Bain’s Café. In the fall of 1969 they moved to Aberdeen, where Anna worked as cook at the Champlin Café, Virginia Café, Dakota Midland Hospital, Bethesda Nursing Home and the Western Café.  Fred and Anna also did custom upholstery for a few years.  She also enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Quilting Ladies at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  After Fred’s death in 1989, Anna lived with her daughter until 2008, when she entered Mother Joseph Manor, where she was living at the time of her death. 

Grateful for having shared Anna’s life are her daughters: Marianne Hieb of Pierre; Marilou Hieb of Aberdeen; grandson Eric Serbousek of Pierre; sisters: Violet (Gary) Franck of Stockton, CA; Delvida Obenauer of Jamestown, ND; Phyllis (Otto) Freier of Alexandria , MN; Brothers: Herbert Obenauer of Jamestown, ND and Delbert (Donna) Obenauer of Ashley, ND.

HAROLD J. GUTHMILLER

Services for Harold J. Guthmiller, 75, Aberdeen will be 9 am, Monday, August 2, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating.  Burial at 11 am at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola.  Harold died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Harold John Guthmiller was born on January 2, 1935 in McPherson County, SD to John and Johanna (Reinecke) Guthmiller.  This is the area where he grew up and attended school.  On June 5, 1960 he married Sharon Gabel at Leola, SD.  They made their home on a farm near Leola until 1971 when they moved into Leola.  He worked for the Department of Transportation until he retired in 1990.  In 1992 they moved to Aberdeen.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen and a past member of St. James Lutheran Church, Leola.  He was a member of Little Leola River and the Aberdeen Senior Center.  He will be greatly missed by Sharon, his children and grandchildren.

ERNEST KETTERLING

The funeral service for Ernest Ketterling, 78, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Friday, July 30, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.  Ernest died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, with family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Ernest Ketterling was born on January 11, 1932 at Hosmer, SD to George and Karolina (Guthmiller) Ketterling.  This is the area where he grew up and attended school.  In November, 1952, Ernest joined the US Army and was stationed at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey.  It was in New Jersey that he met the love of his life, Kathleen. On July 3, 1955, Ernest married Kathleen Hundevadt at Long Lake, SD.  They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked for various plumbers.  In 1973, he started Ketterling Plumbing and Heating.  Ernest retired in 2004. 

Ernest was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  He was also a member of Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24.  Ernest loved the outdoors and working with horses. He liked to do crossword puzzles in his free time. He enjoyed traveling and especially going to Indiana to see his family.  Ernest was a loving father and husband.  One of his greatest joys came from spending time with his grandchildren.   

Grateful for having shared Ernest’s life are his wife, Kathleen of Aberdeen, two sons, Calvin (Terri) Ketterling of North Vernon, IN and Arthur (Rhea) Ketterling of Aberdeen, two brothers, George (Barbara) Ketterling of Aberdeen, and Martin (Frances) Ketterling of Bismarck, ND, three sisters, Esther Schock of Aberdeen, SD, Emma Kleinkneckt of Jamestown, ND, and Anna (Eugene) Smith of Manango, ND, and four grandchildren, Eric Ketterling, Callissa Ketterling, Caitlin Ketterling and Luke Ketterling. 

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, George and Karolina, and two sisters, Margaret Ketterling and Clara Melaas.

LEAH ROSE DINGER

Services for Leah Rose Dinger, three month old daughter of Devin and Hannah Dinger are 10 am, Friday, July 30, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.  Burial at Riverside Memorial Park.  Leah died Saturday, July 24 in Aberdeen.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial fund has been established at Great Western Bank, 119 6th Ave. SE, Aberdeen, SD in Leah’s memory.

Leah Rose Dinger, precious baby girl to Devin and Hannah (Andal) Dinger was born on April 29, 2010 in Aberdeen, SD.  Leah loved giggling, having her feet tickled, laughing while watching TV, listening to music, playing peek a boo and being outside.  Her toothless smile was so precious to her family.  Leah loved her bath time, lying on her tummy, standing while her parents held her and going for rides in the car. 

Leah enjoyed being the center of attention and would make her presence known when other children were around. 

Keeping her hat and blanket on was a constant challenge. 

Leah will be greatly missed by her parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends.  Especially missed will be holding her and making us laugh.

GLENDORA M. HEYD

The funeral service for Glendora M. Heyd, 85, of Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.  Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen.  Glendora died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Tuesday, July 27 with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Glendora May Wolff was born on May 9, 1925 at Danzig, ND to Gottlieb and Frances (Helmer) Wolff.  This is the area where she grew up and attended school.  In 1940, the family moved to Lehr, ND. 

On June 26, 1955, Glendora married Ernest “Ernie” H. Heyd at Aberdeen.  They made their home on a farm near Leola, SD.  In 1994 they retired from farming and moved into Aberdeen.  In March of 1995, Glendora moved into Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Glendora was a member of First United Methodist Church.  She was also a member of the National Blind Association. Glendora had a good work ethic that she passed on to her children.  She was a loving wife and home maker.  Glendora enjoyed knitting and crocheting.  She loved spending time playing board games with her family.  Doing puzzles was a favorite pass time of hers.  Glendora loved to listen to the radio and had a great sense of humor. She was known for her wonderful bear hugs. 

Grateful for having shared Glendora’s life are her five children: Lorren (Janet) Weber, Aberdeen, Joanella Weber, Santa Cruz, CA, Meillo Hochhalter, Los Angeles, CA, Noella (Pernell) Graf, Groton, SD, Wayne (Mary) Heyd, Maynard, MN; nine grandchildren: Roxanne Weber, Brian Weber, Todd (Amber) Weber, Cheryl Graf, Tim Kaiser, Brady Graf, Alexander Graf, Caroline Graf, and Dylon Graf; six great grandchildren: Tanya Farm, Kelsey Farm, Savannah Farm, Jadan Weber, Devin Weber and Jordin Weber, two great great-grandsons, Noah Farm and Jeremy Phillips, and her brother Melvin Wolff, Fargo, ND.

BRIAN L. SAUER

Memorial service for Brian Sauer, 56, of Sioux Falls SD and formerly of Aberdeen, will be 3:00 pm, Friday, July 30, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.  Inurnment will be at Warner Township Cemetery, Warner.  Brian died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Barstow Community Hospital, Barstow CA.

Brian Lee Sauer was born May 12th, 1954 to Joseph and Maurene (Moulton) Sauer in Aberdeen, SD.  This is the area that he was raised and attended school.  Brian was a graduate of Aberdeen Central High School, and Lake Area Technical Institute.

Brian moved to Sioux Falls and was currently employed with Dakota Carriers. Brian considered himself not a truck driver but a “Highway Commodity Relocation Engineer”.

Brian was an avid Viking and Minnesota Twins fan.  He was passionate about his Harley Davidson motorcycle and always looked forward to his annual Sturgis trip.  Brian also loved talking to his dad and his brothers and sister and relatives while he was on the road.  Brian always kept family informed as to where he was at and where he was traveling next.

Brian loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his best friend and traveling companion; a golden lab named “Sammy”.

Grateful for sharing Brian’s life are his father, Joseph Sauer, Brother Richard (Sharon) Sauer, Brother Jerry (Cherie) Sauer, and Sister Sheila (Russell) Rook; all of Aberdeen, and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles

FLOYD C. HOUSE

Funeral service for Floyd C. House, 99, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Floyd died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, July 23, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Floyd Charles House, son of Albert C. and Anna (Ham) House, was born on September 27, 1910 at Frederick, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. Floyd attended grade school at Richland Township Country School and graduated from Frederick High School with the class of 1928. Following high school, Floyd attended Aberdeen Business College.

Floyd was united in marriage to Jennie Flagtvedt on November 28, 1941 at Langford, SD. The couple made their home on a farm near Frederick where they remained until their retirement in 1975. They began making their home in Aberdeen. On January 23, 1992 Floyd’s beloved wife passed away. In 1998, Floyd moved into the Davis Court Apartments in Aberdeen where he remained until the time of his death. Floyd was a kind and gentle man who gave generously and regularly to many needy causes and organizations in his own quiet manner.

Floyd was a past member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Frederick where he served on the church council for two terms. For 13 years, he served on the Richland Township Board and was a member of the Savo Telephone Board for many years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Aberdeen.

While in Aberdeen, Floyd was a member of the Aberdeen Senior Center and was also active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He also delivered Meals On Wheels for many years. Floyd was a member of Sons of Norway as well as the American Association of Retired Persons. Floyd was an avid traveler.  Together Floyd and Jennie visited 49 states including Hawaii and Alaska. They also traveled to Europe and toured extensively twice.

Those left to embrace his memory include a special nephew, Richard Holland and his wife Corinne of Aberdeen and their children and families, a sister in law Myrtle Miller of Switz City, Indiana and several other nephews and nieces.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister Erma House.

Honorary casketbearers will be the residents and staff of the Davis Court Apartments of Aberdeen.

Casketbearers will be Terry Holland, Jered Holland, Richard Holland, Royal Jerde, Sig Flagtvedt and Burton Flagtwet.

HARRIET DIETER

The funeral service for Harriet Dieter, 85, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Harriet died, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, July 17 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday, July 21, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Harriet Lisell was born July 5, 1925 in Roseau, MN to Oscar & Thilda (Brandt) Lisell. She married Russell Dieter on November 20, 1943 at Grand Forks, ND. They made their home in Roseau, Minnesota, and later moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota. They owned and operated a chain of Ben Franklin Stores, including the Ben Franklin in the Super City Mall. Harriet and Russell retired in 1990 and spent winters in Mission Texas. Russell passed away in June of 2004.

Harriet was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Moccassin Creek Country Club. She loved gardening, playing cards and going dancing with Russell. Harriet was a fabulous cook and cherished time spent with her family.

Grateful for having shared Harriet’s life are her daughters, Lucy (Doug) Nelson, Mobridge, Sonia (David) Feickert, Aberdeen, Shelli (Sam) Ryman, Sioux Falls, eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell, son Myron, brother Dalton, and sister Beda.

Services for Rosemary Reshetar, 80, Aberdeen, are 10:00am, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Rosemary, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully at Avera Mother Joseph Manor on Wednesday, July 14, after her long journey with alzheimers.

Visitation is from 1pm-7:30pm, Friday, family present from 6-7:30pm and a prayer service at 7:30pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.

Rosemary Wilcox was born to Robert J. and Alma (Running) Wilcox October 26, 1929 in Sioux Falls, SD. She attended school in Sioux Falls, graduating from Sioux Falls Washington in 1947. While attending Augustana College in Sioux Falls, she met the love of her life Donald S. Reshetar. They married on June 25, 1950 at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. They lived in Egan, Webster and Mitchell before moving to Aberdeen in 1960. Aberdeen is where she and Don made their home and raised their family.

In her life Rosemary most enjoyed her time as a devoted wife to her husband, Don and as a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She loved being in the kitchen preparing family meals and desserts for any occasion, being an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and playing Bridge with her friends. Some of her most treasured moments were spent with her husband as a loyal supporter of Aberdeen Central Golden Eagle Athletics especially games at the Aberdeen Civic Arena and Simmons Field.

Rosemary will dearly be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her kind, gentle heart. We love you mom.

ADELINE PAPKE

The funeral service for Adeline Papke, 83, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, July 16, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Father Jeff Norfolk officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Adeline died Tuesday, July 13, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Adeline Brick was born November 27, 1926 in Aberdeen to Edward & Olga (Wilke) Brick. She grew up on a farm near Aberdeen and attended St. John’s Parochial School.

On October 10, 1948, Adeline married Robert Papke at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Highland Township. They made their home on Robert’s parents farm until 1949, when they moved to a home eight miles southwest of Mina. Robert died on October 22, 1985 at Aberdeen.

Adeline loved to hunt pheasants and fish. She enjoyed going on her annual deer hunts to the Black Hills. In her spare time, Adeline loved playing cards with her friends. She loved animals, especially cats, dogs and feeding birds. Adeline enjoyed wind chimes, reading, working in her flower garden, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Adeline always had a great sense of humor and positive outlook on life. You could always find Adeline with a smile and book in her hand.

Grateful for having shared Adeline’s life are her children, Pattie (Leonard) Dosch, Mina, Larry (Cathy) Papke, Aberdeen, grandchildren, Jessica Papke, Cody Robert Papke, Aberdeen, Aaron (Misty) Dosch, Frederick, great grandchildren, Emma, Joey, Tate, brother, Edd (Bonnie) Brick, Aberdeen, and sister, Doris Adams, Arnoldsville, GA.

SISTER KATHLEEN JOHNSON

Sister Kathleen Johnson, 83, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died July 11, 2010 at Presentation Convent in Aberdeen, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Kathleen Johnson will Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD.  A Scriptural Wake service will be Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel.  Visitation is from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m

 Reverend David Janes will be celebrant and homilist.    

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Pearl Johnson was born May 8, 1927, in Miller SD, to Anne (Lawless) and Oliver Johnson.  She received her elementary education in Miller Public School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1945.  Mary attended Notre Dame Jr. College in Mitchell for two years and then entered Presentation Convent September 8, 1948.  She made her first profession of vows August 10, 1951.  She attended summer classes at St. Catherine College, St. Paul MN and Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI and then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen in 1965.  Sister did graduate studies at Northern State University, South Dakota State University, and Seattle University, Seattle, WA.

 Sister Kathleen (Alphonsus) taught in many Catholic schools:  Huron, Sioux Falls, Dell Rapids, SD, Anoka, MN and Miles City, MT.  She also taught at Presentation College, Aberdeen and the Eagle Butte Campuses.  She also served at Presentation Convent in the laundry and dietary departments.   Sister Kathleen was a talented guitarist who wrote music and poetry. She also enjoyed baking and making apricot jam.

Sister is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters; he sisters, Dorothy Lichty, Miller, SD and Elizabeth Gibbs. Cincinnati, OH; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Victor and Leo and a sister, Eileen Connor.

 Nephews and grand nephews will serve as active casket bearers.

DARLENE WEST

The funeral service for Darlene West, 74, of Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Saturday, July 17, 2010, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Nathan Henschen officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Hecla City Cemetery. Darlene died Saturday, July 10, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen. 

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Darlene Lorraine Hankel was born January 16, 1936 to George and Rosalia Hankel of Oakes, ND. This is the area where she grew up and attended school.

Darlene worked as a secretary in Hecla, SD and later in Milwaukee, WI, before returning back to SD.

On August 27, 1954, Darlene married Lynn West in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Wahpeton, ND, where Lynn attended Wahpeton State School of Science. In 1957, they moved to Minneapolis, MN, where Lynn drove truck for Standard Oil. In 1958, they moved to Bloomington, MN, where they bought their first home (Darlene’s favorite) and raised their four children. In 1965, they moved to Aberdeen, SD, where Lynn worked for Servall Linen and later drove semi cross country for Melroe Company. Darlene and Lynn continued to raise their children and live in Aberdeen until the time of their passing.

Darlene remained an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Darlene enjoyed traveling cross country with Lynn during his trucking career. She also liked puzzles, game shows, movies, playing cards and dancing. Her greatest joy came from being with family and friends. Mom was loved by all the people she touched and she will be truly missed by everyone of us who were fortunate enough to know her.

Grateful for having shared Darlene’s life are her children, Douglas (Elda) West, Craig (Sheri) West, Michele West, grandchildren, Eric Johnson, Michael Schulz, Charissa (Jason) Albert, Joshua Schaecher, great grandsons, Riley & Charley Albert, brothers, Ronald (Shirley) Hankel, Donnel Hankel, Dennis (Beverly) Hankel, sisters, Sharon (Rev. Carolee Coonley Nordyke passed away July 8, 2010 after a long, courageous battle with various illnesses.   “I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”  2 Timothy 4:7

Carol was born June 20, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan to George Baldwin Coonley and Sylva Rilla Emma Beaumont.  She married Ralph Nordyke  June 8, 1963 and this union was solemnized in the Latter-day Saint Los Angeles Temple in 1973.  Carol and Ralph raised three children and became foster parents when they moved to South Dakota in 1974, raising many other children Carol always called her own.  Carol’s heart and home were open to all.  She was an example of generosity, fortitude, and faithfulness.   She also enjoyed charcoal artwork and excelled at this craft. 

Carol is preceded in death by her parents.  She is survived by her husband, Ralph, and their children, Robynne Christiansen of Tennessee, Scott (Marlene) Nordyke of Utah, Kim Mack of Utah, Mary (Curtis) Smith of Texas, Imogene Farrell of Washington, Meredith Habib of Aberdeen, and Kermit James Swan of Aberdeen.  Many other children are etched in Carol’s heart, even though they are not mentioned herein by name.   Carol leaves behind twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

KAREN KAY CURRIE

The memorial service for Karen Kay Currie, 71, Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Pastor Deb Grismer officiating.  Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Karen was a little firecracker and gained her independence from cancer on Sunday, July 4, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. 

Visitation: 1-7pm, Wednesday, July 7, with family present from 5-7pm, at the funeral home. 

Karen Kay Erickson was born June 2, 1939 to Charles “Babe” and LaVersa (Manning) Erickson at Aberdeen, SD.  She grew up and attended school in Aberdeen.  After attending Central High School, Karen moved to Long Beach, CA for a short time before returning to Aberdeen. 

Karen married Charles “Chuck” Currie in June, 1964 at Webster, SD.  They made their home in Aberdeen and Karen worked at the Zebra Bar and later the Circus.  They had three daughters together.  Karen received an accounting degree from The School of Commerce in Aberdeen in the early 70’s.  She then worked at Artz Camera as a book keeper before starting work at Hansen Oil Company.  Karen and Chuck were divorced but remained good friends. 

Karen met Dennis Hansen and they became long time companions.  She worked as a bar maid at the airport and sold Avon over the years. Dennis died in November of 2000.

Karen was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.  She loved playing Bingo, Yahtzee, Dominoes and was a real card shark.  Karen enjoyed scratch tickets, crossword puzzles and Sudoku.  Karen was known as a coupon cutting maniac and a mail-order catalog queen to her daughters.  She was an avid collector of coins, stamps and Beanie Babies. Karen liked to spend time at Mina Lake and Table Rock Lake, Missouri with her family.  Her daughters have fond memories of her riding the jet ski with her grandkids and sitting on the shore of the lake with her Spam t-shirt on.  Cook-outs and family get-togethers were always special to Karen. Her greatest joy came from her family.  She loved to attend her grandchildren’s activities.  She enjoyed tracing her family genealogy history.  Karen had a kind and positive spirit and was never judgmental. 

Grateful for having shared Karen’s life are her three daughters, Christine Albrecht, Blue Eye, MO, Dawn (Steve) Birkla-Mauk, Aberdeen, and Theresa (Rodney) Huff, Aberdeen, grandchildren, Adam Linder, Andrea (Mohammed) Linder-Amer, Logan Linder, Kelly Birkla, Kevin Birkla, Cameron Huff and Hailey Huff, two great grandchildren, Gavin McDonald and Zane Amer, three siblings, Marilyn Jones, Dean (Shari) Erickson and Lynda (Terry) Marko, all of Aberdeen and many nieces and nephews.

ROLAND KUEBLER

The graveside service for Roland Herman Kuebler, 87, of Aberdeen, will be 3PM, Thursday, July 1, 2010 at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.  Roland died Monday, June 28, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen.

Roland Herman Kuebler was born on May 5, 1923 at Carson, ND to Alexander & Beatta (Grosz) Kuebler. When Roland was a young child, his family moved to Mott, ND, and he began attending school. Roland graduated from Mott High School, where he had been active in basketball and football. Shortly after high school, Roland moved to Seattle, WA where he worked in ship yards.

On February 8, 1943 Roland married Norma Gifford at Seattle, WA. He entered the US Navy and was stationed in England where he tested depth charges. In 1959, they moved back to Mott and Roland worked at Mott Motor Company until 1972. They then moved to Bismarck, where he worked for Versatile selling farm implements. He was the regional sales representative for all of South Dakota. Roland retired in 1980 and they moved to Mobridge, SD. In 2005, Roland and Norma moved to Aberdeen due to his health issues.

Roland was a 50 year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mott, ND. Roland was a volunteer fireman. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins. He loved to fish and garden and was known for his tomatoes.

Grateful for having shared Roland’s life are his wife, Norma Kuebler of Aberdeen, five children, Judy (James) Peterson of Denver, CO, Patricia (Carroll) Varns of Hamilton, OH, John Kuebler of Hermosa, SD, Debora (Michael) Panuska of Kankakee, IL and Victoria (Wade Lechner) Hayes of Aberdeen, SD, two brothers, Bill (Shirley) Kuebler of Apple Valley, MN, Richard (Delain) Kuebler of Fargo, ND, ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Beatta and one brother, Ernest Kuebler.

RODERICK C. SCHNAIDT

Roderick C. Schnaidt was born in Ellendale, North Dakota, Aug 28, 1964 to Reuben and Audrey (Schaunaman) Schnaidt and died June 9, 2010 in Palm Harbor, Florida. Rod attended Leola High School, Leola, South Dakota. At age 17, Rod fell from a tree and sustained injuries that led him to be a paraplegic for the remainder of his life. Rod had a love for music and it was an important part of his life. Songs from a wide variety of music remind us of listening to these songs with Rod. A major part of his life was his dog “Elvis” which he got as a puppy and became his companion and best friend.

Rod loved his nieces and nephews and enjoyed family times. He loved pictures and sharing memories of them with friends and relatives. He was a fan of Coca-Cola and had a collection of its memorabilia. Rod was a die-hard Packers fan, enjoying their games and wearing Packer’s clothing. He also loved hats and wearing bandanas. He liked dragons and collected them in any form. Rod’s life included living in South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Georgia, and Florida.

Survived by: Judy Wilson, Sisters, Kristie (Geir) Hole, Karie Callaway, Bonnie Henjum, Jody (Craig Johnson) Wilson. Nieces and nephews: Derrick Logan, Benjamin Hole, Nicholas Hole, Joshua Schumacher, Destiny Callaway, Tyler Callaway, Kayley Henjum, Mitchell Henjum, Craig Johnson Jr., aunts, uncles and cousins. Mother, Audrey (Schnaidt) Dunagan.

VIOLET “VI” OLTMAN

Funeral service for Violet “Vi” Oltman, 95, of Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Saturday, June 26, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hecla, SD. Pastor Jay Haaland officiating. Burial will be in the Hecla City Cemetery at a later date. Violet died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, June 25 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Violet Catherine Popham, daughter of Jesse and Pauline (Grewing) Popham, was born on November 23, 1914 at Andover, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Andover High School. She continued her education at Northern State University in Aberdeen, where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

She was united in marriage to Victor Oltman on June17, 1943 at Watertown, SD. They made their home in Hecla. For many years Violet taught school in the Hecla area, teaching elementary school in Pierpont, Butler and Webster before finishing her teaching career at Hecla. Upon her retirement, Violet taught school for a total of 33 years.

In 1999 the couple began making their home in Aberdeen. Violet’s beloved husband Victor died on March 23, 2002.

Violet’s greatest joy came from being with her family and friends. She truly cherished and enjoyed every moment she spent with them.

Grateful for having shared Violet’s life are her children, Paula Oltman, Aberdeen, Stephen Oltman, Fridley, MN, Jean (Tom) Hutchcraft, Colorado Springs, CO, grandchildren, Connie (Gavin) Rueb, Rob (Cathy) Dafoe, great grandchildren, Nicole, Wesley and Eric Rueb, Jacob, Thomas, and Samuel Dafoe.

EMELIA NEUHARTH

Emelia Fiechtner was born July 23, 1917 at Eureka, SD to Christ and Elizabeth Bitz Fiechtner. This is the area where she grew up  and attended school. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1936. After high school she worked for the Eureka Bazaar as a sales clerk and later for Dr. Christie as a receptionist.

On June 9, 1944, Emelia married Henry Neuharth at Eureka. They made their home on his farm. In 1966, they moved to Aberdeen, where they made their home.

Emelia was a member of First Reformed Church. She was a volunteer worker at St. Luke’s Hospital Gift Shop. She had a passion for her family, friends, crocheting and playing cards.

Grateful for having shared Emelia’s life are her sons, James (Bev) Neuharth, Minneapolis, MN, Wayne (Joanne) Neuharth, Poteau, OK , daughters, Margaret (Mike) Goff, Loveland, CO, Linda (LeRoy) Weyer, Boise, ID, brother, Elwood (Robbie) Fiechtner, Casper, WY, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren .

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, daughter, Joyce (Ed) Mleczko, several brothers and sisters.

OTTO ZELMER

The funeral service for Otto Zelmer, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Friday, June 25, 2010 at Salem-Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Erik Swanson officiating. Burial will be at Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Long Lake, SD. Military Honors by American Legion Post #276. Otto died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Otto Henry Zelmer was born July 20, 1921 to Edward and Anna Marie (Guthmiller) Zelmer near Long Lake, SD. This is the area where he grew up. He attended rural school until his parents moved to Long Lake in 1935, then finished grade school in town. He helped his father in the garage and farming, until he entered the Service in World War II on August 3, 1942, being with the Infantry Anti Tank Co. After his discharge on October 16, 1943, he farmed until he retired.

Otto was a member of Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed going on tours in the state and overseas. One of the greatest highlights was in seeing the Holy Land in 1993.

Grateful for having shared Otto’s life are two brothers, Milbert (Marva Lou) Zelmer, Aberdeen, Edmund (Patricia) Zelmer, Olney, TX, two sisters, Adeline Zelmer, Aberdeen, Anna Marie (Wayne) Smith, Durant, OK, two nephews, Dennis Zelmer and David (Lynn) Smith, three nieces, Wanda Gonzalez, Karen (Ron) Erdmann, Nancy (Rob) Schultz, five grandnephews and seven grandnieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward & Anna Marie Zelmer, brother, Arthur Zelmer, sister, Alma Weishaar and niece, Kari Marie Dutton.

ROSS THOMAS WENSMANN

The funeral service for Ross Thomas Wensmann, 20, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:30pm, Friday, June 18, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Meyer and Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Ross died on Tuesday, June 15, at his home in Aberdeen. 

Visitation will be from 2-7pm Thursday, June 17, with a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Ross Wensmann was born on December 20, 1989 to Thomas and Renea (Christensen) Wensmann at Aberdeen, SD. Ross grew up and attended school at Henry Neill, Holgate Middle School, and Central High School. At age four, Ross was diagnosed with brain cancer and was not given much time to live.  His Lord had great plans for his life though, and he proved them wrong.  Ross was goal oriented and had a vision for his life. One of his biggest goals was to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Another goal was to graduate from high school.  Ross graduated from Central High School and achieved his Eagle Scout rank in 2008. He was attending Northern State University, majoring in Business Administration and Computer Science.

More important to Ross than his goals of achieving things was his love for his Lord Jesus and serving Him. Although his love for Jesus was evident to those who knew him, he confirmed it beyond a shadow of a doubt at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in May 2006.  In doing that, Ross also found great joy in serving others.  He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Aberdeen where he served in their Peer Ministry. He also served others in Volunteer Connections.  Ross was active in SADD at Central High School and CICS (Christians in Christ’s Service) at NSU.  He was also active in several choirs at CHS and NSU and performed in plays at the CHS Theatre. Ross was intricately involved in Camp Dreammakers and was a counselor for two years. Ross was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts. He loved cooking and always wanted to own his own restaurant.  A highlight in Ross’ life was the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They brought true joy to Ross’ life by creating memories.

Ross enjoyed swimming and bowling.  He liked word puzzles; his favorite book being Puzzle Mania.  Ross loved animals, especially his cat Sprite and his dog Caesar. He enjoyed reading and writing and wrote many of his own poems.  Some of his favorite pass times were watching  Cartoon Network and Gameshow Network.  He loved playing games, especially video games, with Super Mario being his favorite.   Ross was also talented on computers and designed his own puzzle web site and maintained the Troop 188 web site.  He liked riding bike with his family.  Ross had a kind and caring spirit.  He loved spending time with his friends and family and had a true servant’s heart.  Above all, Ross loved his Savior and best friend, Jesus. 

Grateful for having shared Ross’s life are his parents, Tom and Renea Wensmann of Aberdeen, two sisters, Leah and Elizabeth Wensmann and brother Taylor Wensmann, all of Aberdeen, paternal grandparents, Herb and Elaine Wensmann of Lakeville, MN, maternal grandmother, Lois Christensen of Madison, SD, seven aunts and uncles, Linda (Lance) Finberg, Steve Wensmann, Sandy (Dean) Smith, and Terry (Deb) Wensmann, all of the Twin Cities area, Ron (Jan) Christensen of Mitchell, SD, Sheri (Carl) Colmark of Hugo, MN and Sandi (Kevin) Leighton of Madison, SD, numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins. 


Ross was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ron Christensen.

BERNICE KELLEY SWANSON

Funeral service for Bernice Kelley Swanson of Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Friday, June 18, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Aberdeen.

Bernice Kelley Swanson passed away at Angelhaus on June 12, 2010.   She lived a full and rich life living to the age of 93.

Visitation will be from 2:00-7:00pm with family present from 5:00-7:00pm Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

The first daughter  was born on September 12 , 1916 to Herman and Sentha Reyelts in Britton, South Dakota,  Bernice M. Reyelts.   

Bernice graduated from Britton High School in 1934 and later attended Business College in Aberdeen.  She worked for Culberts and later joined the staff at Mc Laughlin Electric which eventually became known as PLAINSCO.  Kelley worked her way to heading the Personnel and Finance departments at PLAINSCO.

Bernice and Warren F. Kelley were married and settled into their home in Aberdeen South Dakota.  It was due to her married name that she garnered the nickname “Kelley” which she is still known by today.   She was widowed in 1973 when Warren passed away.

All of her nieces and nephews knew Bernice as Aunt Bernie.  Although she never had children of her own she became an adopted Mom to each and every one of us.  She was a remarkable lady with great class and a uplifting spirit who was a positive influence in all our lives.

Kelley loved life and spent many summers at the Kelley cabin on Ramona Beach at Pickerel Lake.  She enjoyed entertaining and hosting friends and family.  She was free spirited and was always the life of the party.   She was an active and respected member of the community and was very active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

 Kelley enjoyed shopping whether it was looking at catalogs or shopping for a new dress.  She was an accomplished cook and took great pride in her dinner and cocktail parties.  She also enjoyed fishing whether  it was on Pickerel Lake or at the Missouri River.  Kelley also loved to travel.  She traveled to visit friends and relatives to Canada, Greece, Germany, California, Utah, and Hawaii. 

Kelley was remarried to Albin Swanson in 1982.  Together Al and Kelley traveled extensively in their 5th Wheel Trailer all across the country and to Alaska.  They also took many fishing trips to the Missouri River.  Kelley was again widowed in July 2008 with the passing of Al.

Kelley was a strong believer in keeping in touch with her family.  She was always interested in how everyone was doing and was a bright and loving part of their lives.  Kelley was amazing and remarkable.  She was a breath of fresh air.  We will miss the wonderful woman we all loved so much.

Kelley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren Kelley, and her second husband Al Swanson.  She was also preceded by her brother and his wife, Lorenz and Ellyce Reyelts; her brother Clifford Reyelts; her sister, Hazel Sundberg, and her nephew Jeff Kelley.

She is survived by her niece, Ardyce (Ken) Charles of Colorado Springs, CO; her niece,  Janice (David) Zerr of Brownsville, MN; her niece, Lynda Lee Reyelts (Kesley) of Albuquerque, NM; her niece, Mary (Brian) Duoos of Eden Prairie, MN; her niece, Susan (Todd) Walker of Menomonie, WI; her niece, Judy (Alan) Potter of New Brighton, MN; her niece, Ann (Jim) Lasley of Redwood Falls, MN; her niece DeAnna (Nels) Granholm of Brookings, SD; her nephew Charles (Teresa) Sundberg of Mililani, HI; her niece Michelle Kelley of Dillon, CO; her sister-in-law Gladys Reyelts of Britton, SD;  her brother-in-law Jim Kelley of Richmond Lake, SD; her daughter-in-law Marcia Swanson of Minneapolis, MN; and her son-in-law Gregg Swanson of Berkley, CA.

FRED BURRER

Memorial service for Fred Burrer, 72, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Fred died Friday, June 11, 2010 at ManorCare Health Services of Aberdeen.

Fred Burrer was born July 18, 1937 at McPhearson County, SD to Christ & Rosina (Hagel) Burrer. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the Class of 1955.  He attended Northern State College for one year, than enlisted in the US Army in April 1960, where he earned the expert marksman badge. On March 6, 1971, Fred married Judy Bauer at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Fred managed Sherwin Williams for many years.

He enjoyed reading, traveling, bowling and decorating for holidays. Fred was an independent and private man.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Jody (Joshua) Vaux, Aberdeen, grandson, Robert, sister, Alma Wagenmann and many nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Kevin Grant Burrer.

MAJOR EDMUND F. MURRAY

The memorial service for Edmund F. Murray, 81, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00 am, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, with Pastor Gary Compton officiating. Military rites by Sidney L. Smith Post #24. Ed’s wishes were to be cremated, so there will be no visitation. Inurnment will be at a later date at Norway Lutheran Cemetery, Glenham, SD. Edmund died Thursday, June 10, at his home due to complications from cancer.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

The family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army or the Roncalli Nearly New Store.

Edmund F. Murray was born April 18 1929 in Minneapolis, MN. Ed graduated from West High School in 1947. After graduation he attended the University of Minnesota before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. During his Air Force career, he flew  jet fighters as a navigator during the Korean War, and  flew surveillance aircraft during the Vietnam War.

Ed married Jane Agnes Greer on April 16, 1955. During Ed's 21 years of military service, he and his family lived in various places in the U.S. Including two years in England. Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Great Falls in 1966.

After retirement from the Air Force in 1971 at the rank of Major, Ed and his family moved to Aberdeen, SD. Ed then worked for the State of South Dakota for an additional 17 years retiring in 1991. His beloved wife Jane passed away in July of 2004.

After retirement Ed was able to make more time for his passion for golf, as well as volunteer work at Avera St. Lukes.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Myrtle Murray and wife Jane. His memory lives on with his two sons Timothy J. Murray of Aberdeen, SD and Stephen (Mitzi) Murray of Port St. Lucie, FL. Three granddaughters, Sara Jane Murray, Heather Lee-Jolena Murray and Nicole Dawn Murray. Three great grand children, Kayla Weis, Joshua Murray and Jaeden Murray. Ed will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Edna Staebner was born on December 31, 1927, to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Kuebler) Staebner in Eureka, SD. She grew up and attended school in the Eureka area. She moved to Aberdeen at an early age, where she worked for the Ward Hotel. She met and married William C. Banker Jr. on January 19, 1946. She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Rest Home and the Americana Nursing Center. She worked at Dakota Midland as an aide and a housekeeper until it closed. She finished her working career at ManorCare as a housekeeper

Edna was a great cook. She was especially known for her wonderful apple & cherry pies and homemade fudge. She enjoyed working in her garden,  loved flowers and animals. In her free time, Edna enjoyed doing puzzle books. She also loved to watch The Price Is Right and Wheel of Fortune on TV. Edna’s greatest joy was the time she spent with her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Edna’s life are her husband Bill of Aberdeen, two sons, Ronald Banker, Aberdeen, Terry (Cindy) Banker, Aberdeen, four daughters, Bonnie (Rick) Phalen, Mount Prospect, IL, Linda (Curt) Banker-Wagner, Winneconne, WI, Diana Banker, Aberdeen, Patty (Gary) Amen, Lake Norden SD, seven grandchildren, Christine (Dan) Bosma, Rich Banker, Elizabeth, William and Patrick Phalen, Amanda Banker and Corey Amen, three great grandchildren, Kayla, Brooklyn and Aspen, one brother, Reinhold (Phyllis) Staebner and one sister, Loretta Ferguson.

Richard Oscar Hoffman was born September 22, 1923 in McPherson County, Leola, SD, son of John P. and Emma (Schauer) Hoffman. He grew up on the family farm north west of Leola and attended Hoffman Hilltop School. He worked on the farm until he married Gertrude V. Kaul on October 17, 1948 at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola. They lived and farmed on the family farm for twenty-five years. After selling the farm he moved to Aberdeen in 1973. Richard worked for the  Furniture Mart and K-Mart until he retired. He could visit with anyone and enjoyed going for coffee with friends. He had an excellent memory and family and friends asked him for facts many times. He became an avid bear collector. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Aberdeen.

VIONA “SNOOKIE” MONROE

The funeral service for Viona “Snookie” Monroe, 63, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Saturday, June 12, 2010, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Snookie was born September 19, 1946 in Aberdeen, SD, where she grew up and attended school. She then married and had four children. She did not graduate high school, but was very passionate about getting her G.E.D. and accolplished this in 1981 at North Dakota High School. Viona was a member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Moose Lodge, and the D.A.V. & V.F.W Ladies Auxiliary, for many years in South Dakota, North Dakota and Florida.

She was a bartender at the V.F.W. and D.A.V. in Florida during her many years of residence. She then changed careers and worked for Oglesby’s Construction for unfortunately a very short time before she was seriously injured on the job.

Snookie struggled for many years with her disability, but overcame them as best as she could. What kept her strong was her bingo, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.

Snookie passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 peacefully at her home. She is now attending Bingo in Heaven.

MAXINE FIEKENS

Funeral services for Maxine Fiekens, 89, Barnard, will be 11 am, Friday, June 4, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harold E. Salem and Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating.  Burial at Riverside Memorial Park.  Maxine died Monday, May 31, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation 1-7 pm, Thursday with family present from 5-7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Nora Maxine Arwood was born on July 27, 1920, at Willow Lake, SD to Vernon and Nora Antrim Arwood. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On March 7, 1938, she married Edward Fiekens at Willow Lake, SD. They made their home on a farm near Willow Lake, SD until 1971 when they moved to Barnard, SD. They worked for the school until 1983 when they retired. She helped her daughter at the post office when needed over a period of several years. The work she treasured most of all was her service as a foster grandmother at the Barnard School. She loved each of the children very much, and greatly missed her work with them when she could no longer physically manage getting to and from the classroom. She had a heart for all children and when younger, had a dream to have an orphanage. Maxine was a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend, and a delight to know. Her sense of humor and quick wit were endearing to those who knew her. Her Christian faith carried her through challenging times. She will be greatly missed.

Maxine was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Dorcas Circle and Ladies Aid.

Grateful for having shared Maxine’s life are her children, Betty (Doyne) Jensen, Frederick, Peggy (Charles) Cruse, Barnard, Nancy Mathisrud, Knoxville, TN, Mary (Harold) Forbes, Morgantown, WV, Leroy (Kara) Fiekens, Knoxville, TN,  brother, Maynard Arwood, Point of Rock, WY, twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

REUBEN E. KAPPES

Funeral services for Reuben Enoch Kappes, 79, Aberdeen, formerly of Leola will be 2:00pm, Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites by Roy S. Hickman American Legion Post No. 78. Reuben died Sunday, May 30, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-5pm, Wednesday June 2, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, and an hour prior to the funeral service.  Prayer service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 7pm on June 2, 2010.  Please consider alternate routes to the church due to construction on 8th Ave. NE and Dakota and State Streets.

Reuben Kappes was born October 21, 1930 at Ashley, ND to Adam & Katherine (Gross) Kappes. He was raised on a farm near Long Lake SD, and in 1953 married Verna Kramer on April 12 at Ashley ND. They farmed the original family homestead and raised cattle, grain and horses until 1971 when they moved to Leola. In 1963, Reuben began his extensive auctioneering career. He auctioned land parcels, farms, estates, personal property and real estate. He was active as a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser.   Reuben and Verna moved to Aberdeen in 2001, where he semi-retired, but continued to dabble in rental contracting and working at Lincoln Futures.

Reuben was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Leola American Legion. He was past commander of Adolph Schumacher Legion Post of Long Lake and a Leola City Council member. Reuben was instrumental in bringing grants and donations of money to Leola for the construction of the Leola Municipal building, Medical building/library and swimming pool. Reuben was also known for sharing his auctioneering talents with McPherson County 4H and was recognized for 25 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, hosting and organizing social gatherings. He was active in the Republican Party in the McPherson County. Reuben loved all animals and especially children.

Pallbearers will include Dennis Kappes, Jerome Kappes, Tom Kappes, Ron Kappes, Neal Nelson and Robert “Bobby” Hatten.  Honorary Casket Bearers will be Bill Stolle, Jim Goebel, Charles Hoffman, Leon Crawford and Larry Pharris.

WILLIAM T. SCHNOOR

Memorial service for William “Bill” Schnoor, 80, of Mansfield, SD will be 10:00am, Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Mansfield Presbyterian Church. Pastor Jon Damaska will officiate. Military honors by Harris-Dennis American Legion Post #151. Inurnment will be at a later date. Bill died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at his home.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday, June 2, 2010 with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

William Thomas Schnoor, son of William H. and Margaret F. (Thomas) Schnoor, was born on June 2, 1929 at Rapid City, SD. He grew up on a farm near Orient, SD and attended country school. Bill boarded in Miller, SD and graduated from Miller High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in July of 1952. Bill worked in the motor pool and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in July of 1960, Bill returned to the Orient area and began driving truck.

Bill was united in marriage to Modesta Wilson in Redfield, SD. To this marriage three children, Dale, Mark and Janet were born. They made their home in Mansfield where Bill began working for Wilfang Implement and Koester Implement for the next 25 years.

Bill was united in marriage to Edna Entzel Gillespie on February 13, 1965 at Faulkton, SD. The couple made their home in Ipswich, SD for a short time before moving back to Mansfield. To this union, two children, Everett and Ernest were born. Bill began working as a mechanic at Lincoln Mercury in Aberdeen and later at Beadle Ford in Ipswich, SD. Finally he began working for Krause Allbee Farms where he remained until his retirement.

Bill will always be remembered by those who knew him as a practical joker. He loved reading books by Louis L’Amour and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bill was a member of the Mansfield Presbyterian Church and the Harris-Dennis American Legion Post #151 at Mellette.

Grateful for having shared Bill’s life are his former wife Edna, five children, Dale Schnoor of Black Hawk, SD, Mark (Kristie) Schnoor of Aberdeen, Janet (Dave Murdock) Schnoor of Camano Island, Washington, Everett (Annette Fischer) Schnoor and Ernest ( Toni) Schnoor both of Mansfield, grandchildren, Desaray Schnoor, Jared Fischer, Klaryssa Schnoor, Vanessa (Nick Westlund) Schnoor, Dexten Frericks, Michael Schnoor, Saven Lechner, Grasen “Bubba” Lechner, Logen Lechner, and Courtlen Lechner,  great granddaughter, Meadow Westlund, step son, George (Victoria Fortin) Gillespie, step grandchildren Ryan Gillespie and Merrit (Victor) Klapperich-Aguayo , step great grandchildren Jacob Mathis and Madaline Aguayo and two cousins, Charles Pitz and Mark Pitz.

JOHN A. WELLS

Memorial service for John A. Wells, 87, Aberdeen, will be 2:30pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational UCC, Aberdeen. Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial, Riverside Memorial Park. John died Friday, May 28, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

John Andrew Wells, son of Cornelius and Alice (Skerel) Wells, was born May 20, 1923 in Webster, SD. This is the area where he attended school, graduating from Webster High School in 1942. John enlisted in the United States Navy and served as an aviation radio technician. Following his honorable discharge, John attended Northern State College in Aberdeen. He transferred to South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. At this time, John began his employment with Northwestern Public Service in Webster and Redfield, SD

John was united in marriage to Gladys Mattes Foglesong on September 2, 1950. In 1955, they began making their home in Aberdeen. John began working for McLaughlin later known as Plainsco, where he specialized in outdoor lighting. He worked many years for this company, retiring as Sr. Vice President at the age of 62.

John found great joy in music and especially loved singing. He sang in the church choir for 55 years and the Aberdeen Barbershop Chorus for many years. He also was a member of the Elks Chorus/Aberdeen Men’s Chorus for 52 years. In his free time, John enjoyed playing golf. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his family. 

Grateful for having shared John’s life are his wife Phyllis Krikac Wells of Aberdeen, daughter, Suzi Grote of Sioux Falls, SD, granddaughter Lexi Grote of Aberdeen, step daughter Beth Auwarter, step son, Bill (Betty) Krikac, sisters, Jean A. Thomas of Webster and Joan (Marlin) A. Wanner of Temecula, CA and many nieces, nephews, and step grandchildren.

John is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Gladie, brother James A. Wells, step sons, Keith Krikac and Dan Krikac and infant daughter Cynthia Ann Wells.

Honorary urn beares will be the members of Plymouth Congregational UCC Choralier Choir and the Aberdeen Area Men’s Chorus.

THERESA HEUPEL

Funeral services for Theresa Heupel, 88, Aberdeen, will be 10 am, Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at New Life Fellowship with Pastor Joe Moslander officiating.  Burial at 2 pm, at the Eureka City Cemetery, Eureka, SD.  Theresa died Friday, May 28, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Tuesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Theresa Bertsch was born on July 11, 1921 in McPherson County, SD to Jacob and Kathrina (Ladner) Bertsch.  This is the area where she grew up and attended school.  On October 10, 1940 she married Edwin Heupel near Venturia, ND.  In 1941 they purchased the farm five miles NE of Eureka where they farmed for thirty-seven years.  In 1978 they retired and in 1981 they moved to Eureka.  Edwin died on March 16, 1987 at Eureka.  In 1990 she moved to Aberdeen.  She became a resident at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in February 2010.

Theresa’s faith in the Lord was the center of her life being baptized in July of 1934.  She was an active member of First Bapitst Church, Eureka.  She moved to Aberdeen where she was a member of New Life Fellowship.  Her many talents were being a seamstress, her pretty flower gardens, quilting, custom wedding and anniversary cakes, volunteering at Avera St. Lukes Hospital and R.S.V.P. Singers.  Last but not least playing skippo with her family and friends.

MAVONE BEVERLY BRANDLEE

Graveside service for Mavone Beverly Brandlee, 86, of Groton, SD and formerly of Aberdeen will be 3:00pm Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Riverside Memorial Park. Pastor Deb Grismer will officiate. Mavone died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

Visitation will be from 1-6pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Mavone Beverly Brandlee, daughter of Oscar and Anna (Gulsvig) Brandlee, was born on May 24, 1924 at Aberdeen, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1942. While in high school, Mavone was active in the concert and marching bands. She was well known for her piano playing skills and was also a very talented singer. Following high school, Mavone went immediately into the working world. For many years she did secretarial work for Paul Green, Hub City Iron, Socony and Mobile Oil Companies and later the South Dakota School for the Visually Handicapped.

Mavone was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary and was honored for her many years of continuous membership. Throughout her life she cared for several elderly Aberdeen residents in their homes, and also cared for her parents in their home well into their elderly years. Mavone made Aberdeen her home until 1994 when she entered the Golden Living Center in Groton, where she remained until the time of her death.

Mavone is survived by many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Honorary casket bearers will be the entire staff at the Golden Living Center in Groton.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

LEO E. HOFFMAN

The service for Leo E. Hoffman, 79, Aberdeen, will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Military Honors by Sydney L. Smith American Legion Post #24. Leo died Thursday, May 27, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-8pm, Monday, with family present from 6-8pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Leo was born on December 17, 1930 to Christian C. & Eva (Schock) Hoffman on a farm east of Long Lake, SD. He attended rural school in the area and then worked on the family farm with his parents. In February of 1952, he was drafted to the U.S. Marine Corps. During his tour of duty, he spent six months in Japan. He was discharged following two years of service. Following his discharge, he started farming with his older brother Ernest on the family farm.

In 1975, he married Wilma (Schmitt) Traxinger. They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers until he retired in 1993.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, was a life member of the VFW, Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24 of Aberdeen, and the Aberdeen Area Senior Center. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bus tours and playing cards.

Grateful for having shared Leo’s life are his wife, Wilma, two daughters, Sandy (David) Jorgenson, Sioux Falls, Candie (Rob) Traxinger, Newbury, Vermont, four grandchildren,  Andrew Jorgenson, Nick Jorgenson, Rachael Dube and Travis Dube, one brother, Harold (Hilda) Hoffman, Aberdeen, a sister, Marcella (Earl) Weisz, Park River, ND, sister-in-law, LaVina Hoffman, Agar, SD and four nieces and six nephews.

IONE EHLEY

Ione Vander Laan, daughter of John and Angeline (Van Vugt) Vander Laan, was born on February 4, 1934 on her grandparents' farm near Westfield, ND. She was raised in the Westfield area and attended county school through the eighth grade. Ione attended Pollock High School in Pollock, SD graduating with the class of 1951.

Ione attended Ellendale State College in Ellendale, ND where she earned her Standard Normal (Teachers Certificate). Following her graduation she taught country school.

Ione was united in marriage to Marvin Ehley on August 16, 1957 at Westfield. Together the couple made their home in Milnor and Elgin, ND for several years where they taught school. They began making their home in Aberdeen where Ione raised their family. Later in life, Ione began teaching and tutoring elementary students in Aberdeen, retiring from CC Lee Elementary School in 1996.

Ione enjoyed singing in the choir and loved square dancing. She also enjoyed traveling. In her free time, Ione enjoyed gardening and also loved flowers. Ione enjoyed sewing and doing arts and crafts. Her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughter Sarah. Ione was a member of North Highland United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Ione’s life are her husband Marvin of Aberdeen, one daughter, Jean (Paul) Dutt of Aberdeen, one son, Mark Ehley of Bismarck, ND, one brother, Keith Vander Laan, one granddaughter, Sarah Dutt and three step granddaughters, Jessica Dutt, Catherine (Eli) Reitzel and Laura Dutt.

Ione was preceded in death by her parents John and Angeline Vander Laan.

EDWARD “ED” MEHLHAFF

Edward Mehlhaff, son of Heinrich and Maria (Hieb) Mehlhaff, was born on August 4, 1934 at Hosmer, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Hosmer High School with the class of 1952. Following high school, Ed attended the School of Commerce in Aberdeen. He worked various jobs in the Aberdeen area. Ed served in the United States Army and Army National Guard from which he was honorably discharged in August of 1960. For a short time Ed was employed at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD.

Ed was united in marriage to Verna Schmidtgall on October 18, 1963 in Bowdle, SD. In 1965, he became employed at Hub City Iron, later called Safeguard. Ed retired thirty-two years later. During his career at Safeguard, he was also a Real Estate Agent for various brokerages in Aberdeen, until the time of his death.

Ed was a member of Lions, Shriners, a lifetime Legion Member and on the Aberdeen Board of Realtors. He loved dancing, music, visiting and dining out.

Grateful for having shared Ed’s life are his son, Wayne Mehlhaff, Aberdeen, daughter, Veronica (Sean) Wahl, granddaughter, Hunter Wahl,  grandsons, Jackson and Lincoln Wahl, and brother, Arnold (JoAnne) Mehlhoff, sisters, Florence Schock and Esther (Alvin) Ottenbacher, and special friend, Nettie Frederick .

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Walter, Harold, and Ervin.

MILDRED HIEB

Funeral service for Mildred Hieb, 96, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1015 N. Highway 281, Aberdeen. Rev. William Lee Nelson-Loefke officiating. Burial at Ipswich City Cemetery. Mildred died Monday, May 24, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be 1-7pm, Friday, May 28, family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Mildred S. Hieb was born on March 1, 1914 to Henry and Augusta (Manska) Wietgrefe at Ipswich, SD.  This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Ipswich High School in 1931. 

Mildred married Walter Hieb on December 2, 1937 at Brainerd, MN.  They made their home in Ipswich until moving to Selby, SD in 1941.  After raising her children she served as a nutritionist at the Selby School. However, she spent most of her life doing volunteer work. For 25 years Mildred volunteered at the Selby Nursing Home as a “Grey Lady” and was also active in all the Church activities at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They moved to Mina, SD in 1989, where they helped build and were charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. They moved to Rapid City in 1994, where they were members of Atonement Lutheran Church, until her husband of 59 years passed away. At this time she moved back to Selby and in 2001 she began making her home in Aberdeen.

The joy of Mildred’s later years was spent rocking babies at the Bethesda Daycare Center in Aberdeen as part of the Foster Grandparent Program. In November of 2009, she moved into Bethesda Town Square and spent her last days at Bethesda Home, just down the hall from all the babies she rocked at the Daycare.

Grateful for having shared Mildred’s life are two daughters, Eldene Henderson of Rapid City and Verla Schumacher of Mina, one son Robert (Bev) Hieb of Rapid City, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Mariel, six brothers, one sister and one great grandson.

LARRY L. ANDERSON

The funeral service for Larry L. Anderson, 75, Aberdeen, will be 1:30pm, Monday, May 24, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Larry died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital.

Visitation is 2-7pm Sunday, May 23, with Masonic Service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home,1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen, SD.

Larry Louis Anderson was born on November 6, 1934 at Mitchell, SD to Roger V. and Lorraine M. (Demaray) Anderson. He attended elementary and middle school at Mitchell, SD.  Larry graduated from Aberdeen Central High School, 1952.  After graduation, he attended Northern State in Aberdeen for two years.

Larry married Phyllis J. Johannsen at Wilmot, SD on October 31, 1954. He began his employment with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in 1955 as office clerk and retired after 40 years of service as Aberdeen Region Materials & Design Engineer.  Larry retired on January 13, 1995. For many years, Larry was an instructor in the AARP Driver Safety program.  Larry was known for his dedication and work ethic.  He enjoyed woodworking, leisurely time on his computer, and time with his family and grandkids.

Larry was a Life Member and past Master of Sunrise Lodge No. 211, A.F. & A.M. and was the current Secretary of that organization. Larry served as a past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of South Dakota 2005-2006.  Larry was a Life Member and past High Priest of  Aberdeen Chapter No. 14, R.A.M. and a member and past Commander of Damascus Commandry No. 10, Knights Templar. He was currently serving as Secretary of both organizations. Larry was a Life Member of Aberdeen Scottish Rite and was a member of the Aberdeen Yelduz Shrine. He was a member and past Sovereign of St. Simon Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine.  Larry was a Life Member and past Patron of Minerva Chapter No. 5, Order of the Eastern Star and a past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota, O.E.S. in 1984. He was a Senior DeMolay and recipient of the DeMolay Legion of Honor and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen for over 60 years.

Grateful for having shared Larry’s life are his wife, Phyllis of Aberdeen, children David L. (Diane) Anderson, of Independence, MN and Michele M. N. (NORMA) LUCILLE MITCHELL

(Norma) LuCille Mitchell, 86, Aberdeen, is 10am Saturday, May 22, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eldon Reich and Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.  Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. LuCille went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation: 1-7pm Friday, May 21, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

LuCille Knecht, daughter of Henry and Myrtle (Marlow) Knecht was born on November 15, 1923 near Houghton, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Hecla High School in 1941. She attended Northern Normal Teachers College, earning her teachers certificate in 1942. She taught for one year at a county school north of Claremont, SD prior to teaching for one year at the Loyalton Pubic School at Loyalton, SD.

She was united in marriage to Charlie Mitchell on September 3, 1943 at Houghton. They made their home on the Mitchell family farm near Houghton where they remained for many years and raised their family. LuCille was a wonderful cook and entertainer. Over the years she fed many friends and relatives and could always add another plate to the table for any unexpected guests.

LuCille was a loving wife and mother and cherished the time she spent with her family. She loved flowers and also enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and also served as Bible School Director and teacher at both the Houghton and Aberdeen Wesleyan churches. LuCille was a member of the Shelby Friendship Club for over fifty years. She was also a member of the Houghton Three in One Extension Club. After retiring from life on the farm, they made their home in Aberdeen and enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ for 18 years.

Grateful for having shared LuCille’s life are her husband Charlie, Aberdeen, four children, Dennis (Laretta) Mitchell, Houghton, Marcy (Carroll) Stenseth, Rapid City, Curtis (Paula) Mitchell and Carson Mitchell both of Aberdeen, three sister-in-laws, Helen Knecht, MarGarett Knecht and Mary (Glenn) Jensen, brother-in-law, Gordon “Monty” (Helen) Tunby, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, cousin and good friend Alta Fetherhuff, Godson Michael Kampa and many nieces and nephews.

LuCille is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wayne and Howard Knecht and sisters Frances Smith, Maryellen Tunby and Alice Marietta Knecht.

ROBERT SHEARN CLEMENSEN

Funeral service for Rob Clemensen, 80, Aberdeen and formerly of Brentford, SD will be 11:00am, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at First United Methodist Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Tom Haggar will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Rob died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-7:00pm Monday, May 17, with family present from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Robert Shearn Clemensen, son of Sam and Mary (Shearn) Clemensen was born on August 25, 1929 on the family farm near Brentford. He graduated from Brentford High School with the class of 1947. Rob attended SDSU for two years and then started his own farm in 1949.

He married Lois Carlson, his high school sweetheart, on November 25, 1950 at the Brentford Congregational Church. They made their home on a farm near Brentford where they raised their family until retiring to Aberdeen in 1990, but he continued helping his son on the farm.

Rob thoroughly enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was a league golfer at Fischer Grove Golf Course in Redfield and later at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen. Rob also enjoyed music, Bridge and spending time with his family. He and Lois enjoyed nearly thirty winters together in Mesa, AZ.

Rob was an active director on the South Dakota Wheat Growers Board for thirteen years, serving a portion of the time as vice president. He was a member of the Mason’s, Scottish Rite, and Plains Lions Club. Rob was a member of the Brentford Congregational Church, where he served as Deacon, and current member of First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Rob’s life are his wife, Lois of Aberdeen, one daughter, Jan (Erv) Schoppe of Blaine, MN, two sons, Lon of Sioux Falls and Hal (Terri) of Conde, SD, two brothers, Arlo (Betty) of Aberdeen and Alan (Bonnie) of Brentford, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Rob was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Myrna Gibney and Marge Goodwin.

ALICE NEREIM

The funeral service for Alice M. Nereim, 92, of Aberdeen, will be 2pm Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Deb Grismer officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.  Alice died in her sleep on Wednesday, May 12, at Bethesda Parkside Retirement Community, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Arrangments by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Alice M. Hartberg was born on the Pfutzenreuter farm near Hecla, SD, on March 20, 1918 to Arvid and Minnie (Peterson) Hartberg.  She was raised on the family farm near Langford and graduated from Langford High School.

Alice was married to the late Orlan J. Nereim, also of Langford. For a brief time Alice lived at Ft. Hood, Texas where Orlan was recovering from wounds received in WWII.   Upon returning to South Dakota, and except for the five years she lived on her and her husband’s farm near Mina Lake, she lived in Aberdeen.  She became one of the first residents at the Bethesda Apartments on 12th Ave. SE and, until her passing she was proud to be the longest resident there.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she worked as an office clerk, a sales clerk and a bookkeeper; the latter at SPORTARAMA, owned by Orlan and his partner Orville Fenske.  Mrs. Nereim taught Sunday school and was a 65 year member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. 

Grateful for having shared Alice’s life are:  two sons; Allan F. (Bonnie) Nereim of Cary, NC, and Monty K. Nereim of La Jolla, CA, her sister Myrtle Syhre of Aberdeen, four grandchildren; Allison Smith, Matthew A. Nereim, Matthew B. (Melissa) Nereim, and Melinda (Ryan) Raymond, seven great grandchildren; Isabella Smith, Natasha Smith, Madison Nereim, Maria Nereim, Shawn Chick, Casey Chick and Emily Raymond.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Orlan, and her brother, Raymond Hartberg.

GEORGE E. TARVER

George Edward “Turk” Tarver, 82, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, in North Oaks, MN at the Clare Bridge Senior Living facility where he had resided for a short time.

A celebration of his life will be Tuesday, May 18, at 2 pm at the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St. His brother, the Rev. Russell Tarver of Sioux Falls, will officiate. A family burial will precede the celebration at the Sunset Memorial Gardens at 11 am with the Rev. Sheila Richards also officiating and military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24.Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Monday, May 17, at the funeral home.

George Edward Tarver was born August 19, 1927, to Jewell and Mary Ellen Tarver in Aberdeen. He attended Aberdeen Central High School, graduating in 1945. He played varsity football and basketball.  Following high school and at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific War Theater during World War II, stationed in the Philippines.  After his military service, he graduated from the University of South Dakota where he was president of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, played on the USD Coyotes basketball team and studied business and engineering.

He married Marjorie Sophia Steiger on July 6, 1951, in Huron. Following their marriage they resided in Rapid City, returning to Aberdeen to make it their lifelong home soon after the birth of their first daughter, Marlie, in 1952.

As the owner and manager of Tarver Construction Company, he worked as a self-described general contractor doing commercial building and remodeling projects in the Aberdeen area from the early 1950s through the mid 1980s. During his career, he was named an Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, served on the South Dakota Housing Authority and was active in the Aberdeen Jaycees and even found time to play amateur basketball and slow pitch softball.

As an example of his many building endeavors, he was the contractor for the First Christian Church building, where he also served as a church elder. Located at 15th Ave. and S. Lloyd St., the building still remains in use today. The local church, however, disbanded, and members joined the First United Methodist Church in the 1970s. He became active at First United Methodist, serving on varied committees and helping with church building repairs.

Strong-willed, resourceful, reliable and directed to help others, many of his most cherished accomplishments were known quietly within his family and close acquaintances. He will be remembered for his great love and fondness for his children, grandchildren and extended family. He was a dedicated caretaker for his mother for the later years of her life. He dutifully assumed many care activities for the love of his life, Marjorie, when she developed health issues and continued doing so until his own health declined.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, three daughters, Marlie (Tracy) Trask of Wall; Kristie (Jim) Estes of Saint Paul, MN;  and Laura (Scott) Wiswall of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren, Taylor Trask of Denver, CO, Tara Trask of Nashville, TN and Tiffany Trask of Vermillion; Meredith Estes of Duluth, MN, Madeline Estes and Martin Estes of Minneapolis, MN; Libby Wiswall and Addy Wiswall of Aberdeen; one brother, Russell of Sioux Falls; and four sisters, Peggy Tarver and Beverly Marshall, both of Seattle, WA, Dorothy Johnson of Rapid City and Virginia L. Belk of Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers including Robert, Richard and brother William, who died in infancy, and his oldest sister, Lois.

WALTER E.  FROHLING

The funeral service for Walter E. Frohling, 88, Aberdeen, and formerly of Hecla will be 10:30am, Monday, May 10, 2010, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jais Tinglund officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Walter entered into eternal life with his loving wife at his side, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Mother Joseph Manor.              

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Sunday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Walter Edward Frohling was born August 12, 1921 at Hecla, SD to Jacob & Zena (Stolle) Frohling. He was baptized on August 28, 1921 and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Hecla.  Walter grew up and helped on the family farm.  He attended school in Liberty Township, rural Hecla.   

Walter married the one who stole his heart, Mae Anderson on October 28, 1945 at the family farm in Hecla. They continued to farm in Liberty Township. 

Walter was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Hecla. He was on the Board of Directors for the Frederick Coop and was an ASCS Brown County Committeeman. Walter enjoyed pitching horseshoes, woodworking, playing cards, bowling, and playing pool. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with the kids. Walter was active in, and  loved running the sawmill at James Valley Threshers. He enjoyed many family gatherings and took great pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Walter was a very humble man. He loved traveling to Colorado to visit his family.

IRL H. SCHAUNAMAN

The funeral service for Irl Henry Schaunaman, 91, Aberdeen, is 10:30am Saturday, May 8, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Irl passed away Monday, May 3, 2010 at Manor Care Health Services, Aberdeen.

Visitation is 1-7pm Friday, May 7, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Irl Henry Schaunaman was born on March 23, 1919 to Henry and Cecilia (Wullweber) Schaunaman, the second of thirteen children, at their home near Aberdeen. Cecilia delivered Irl at home by herself while Henry was gone procuring the doctor.  Irl was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.  He attended several schools in Lincoln Township.  Irl graduated from Westport High School. When Irl was 12 years old, he brought in a farm horse to race in the horse races at the Brown County Fairgrounds and won first place.  He helped his father farm with horses when he was young. Irl played basketball and baseball and went to the state baseball tournament. Irl worked at the CC Camps planting trees in the Black Hills. During the summers of 1948 and 1949, Irl went with his dad’s new Dodge truck and new self-propelled Minneapolis Moline combine with a 12 foot head, and custom combined from Brownsville, TX up to the Westport area. When they were young, Irl and his siblings shocked a grain field as payment for an ice cream freezer.  They later entertained many times with ice cream they made from ice cut out of Richmond Lake. 

On February 14, 1957, Irl married Irene Ristau at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Highland Township.  They lived in New Hope Township for awhile. In 1959 they moved to a farm half a mile North of Warner.  They farmed in that area for nearly 40 years. 

Irl was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he held various church offices.  He was treasurer of the Lutheran Layman’s League for over 30 years.  Irl was also a 30 year member of NFO and a long time member of the South Dakota Farmer’s Union. Irl liked pitching horseshoes and bowling.  He enjoyed going to farm sales with his sons.  Irl especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. 

Grateful for having shared Irl’s life are his wife, Irene, Aberdeen, two sons, Lee (Kelly) Schaunaman, Aberdeen, and Gary Schaunaman, Warner, one daughter, Susan K. (Jon) Seaton, Aberdeen, six grandchildren, Naomi and Rachel Seaton, Stephanie, Audra, Jonah, and Elijah Schaunaman, five step-grandchildren, Amanda (Andy) Dolan, Pflugerville, TX, Staci (Sreedhar) Thota, Greely, CO, Justin Hull, Sioux Falls, SD, Dominic Hull, Iowa City, IA and Spencer Hull, Aberdeen, three step-great grandchildren Ryan and Adriene Dolan and Sohan Thota.  He is also survived by his siblings, Harold (Pauline) Schaunaman, Westport, Don (Hazel) Schaunaman, Aberdeen, Albert Schaunaman, Aberdeen, Ila (Ardell) Ronning, Billings MT, Lyle (Trudy) Schaunaman, Aberdeen, sister-in-law, Peggy Schaunaman, Sioux Falls, brothers-in-law, Mike Serna, Aberdeen and Lyle (Virginia) Morrison, Ellendale, ND, and many nieces and nephews. 

Irl was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, George Schaunaman, Anita Serna, Leon Schaunaman, Edwin Schaunaman, Henry Schaunaman, Jr., Ruth Morrison and Vern Schaunaman.    

Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Aberdeen.

WAYNE LEE JENSEN

Funeral services for Wayne Lee Jensen, 66 of Aberdeen, will be 2:00pm, Friday, May 7, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Aberdeen, with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wayne died Monday, May 3, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm with family present from 5-7pm Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Pallbearers will be John Jensen, Alan Jensen, Keith Jensen, Richard Jensen, Casey Jensen and Shannon Jesz.

Wayne Jensen was born on May 23, 1943 to Gustav and Rosella (Keup) Jensen at Groton SD.  He was raised on a farm southeast of Aberdeen.  At the age of five, Wayne began his education at Elder Grove Country School.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In 1961 he graduated from Bath High School.

Following high school Wayne farmed with his father until 1969 where he moved to Aberdeen and began working at Aberdeen Equipment.  He later was employed at Brown County and Harry Implement, followed by The Aberdeen American News where he worked in the mailroom.

Wayne enjoyed watching westerns, playing softball, and cherished his time with family. He loved to care for his dog Nellie and feed his friends the squirrels.

Grateful for sharing Wayne’s life are siblings Dale and Nancy Jensen of Aberdeen, sister-in-law Joyce Jensen, and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceeded in death by his parents, sister Carol (Jensen) Rabine, brother Bill Jensen, brother-in-law Larry Rabine and dog Nellie.

SHARLOT “BUNNY” FLUKE-SCHERF

The funeral service for Sharlot “Bunny” Fluke-Scherf, 92, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Friday, May 7, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.  Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen at a later date.  Sharlot passed away Monday, May 3, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen. 

Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, May 6, with family present from 5-7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. 

Sharlot “Bunny” Stewart was born on June 20, 1917 at Stratford, SD to Fay and Irene (Hickman) Stewart. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Stratford High School. 

On February 14, 1939, Sharlot married Frank Fluke in Aberdeen. They lived in the Bath and Aberdeen area. Frank died July 14, 1977.  Sharlot married Harold Scherf on March 11, 1980 in Aberdeen.  They lived in the Mina and Aberdeen area. Harold died December 3, 1992. 

Sharlot was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in UMW Ladies Aide. She was also a member of Sodak Extension Club. Sharlot loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends. She loved reading, especially poetry and was an avid piano player. 

Grateful for having shared Sharlot’s life are her children, Connie (Chet) Howard of Bath, Carol (Jerry) Wright of Bath and Cindy Sherrill of Aberdeen, five grandchildren, Lona (Charlie) Haussman, Scott Howard, Todd (Connie) Wright, Chad (Amy) Wright and Jeannie (Chad) Ferguson, fourteen great-grandchildren, step-children Sam (JoAnn) Scherf and Sally Scherf, step-grandchildren, Karla Scherf, Alison Scherf, Dennis Miller, and Tammy Meidinger, and sisters-in-law, Glennis Stewart and Joyce Stoneback and brother-in-law Wayne Fluke.

VERNON C. LUKE

Service for Vernon C. Luke, 91 of Bath, SD, will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Faith United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Pastor Jack Erickson officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen at a later date. Vernon died Sunday, May 2 at the Golden Living Center in Groton, SD.

Visitation is Wednesday, May 5 from 1-7pm with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Vernon C. Luke, son of Chester H. and Mary Louise (Schott) Luke, was born on February 28, 1919 at Aberdeen, SD. He was raised and attended school in the Bath area, graduating from Bath High School. Following his high school graduation, he continued making his home on the Luke family farm working side by side with his parents.

He was united in marriage to Jo Ann Koglmeier on February 13, 1951 at Aberdeen. Vernon built a new home on the family farm where he lived for many years and raised his family. Vernon loved his time on the farm, taking great pride in raising his crops and Angus cattle. He was truly a jack of all trades and could be counted on to fix nearly anything. Vernon was a self taught electrician and was also an accomplished welder and mechanic.

Vernon was an active man. For many years he was active on the Bath Township Board, serving as both director and treasurer. He was a member of the International Association of Electrical Contractors and the Farm Bureau. He was also a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Aberdeen.

Vernon was a farmer at heart. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent countless hours observing nature. Vernon cherished the time he spent with his family and friends and enjoyed visiting with his neighbors on the farm.

Grateful for having shared Vernon’s life are one daughter, Lucy (John) Weigel of Bath, two granddaughters, Chelsey and Adrienne Weigel, cousins, Maxine Voight, Frances Boyer and Marvin (Mary) Luke, two brother-in-law’s, Jerry (Gloria) Koglmeier and Ernie (Marilyn) Koglmeier and two sister-in-law’s Shirley Mack, and Alice Mellen

He is preceded in death by his parents Chester and Mary Louise Luke, wife Jo Ann Luke and one son Allan Luke.

Honorary casket bearers will be all of Vernon’s friends

Casket bearers will be Jim Seaton, Jon Seaton, Rick Schlauch, Dennis Beckler, Stan Beckler and Mark Shishnia.

FLOYD ALLAN SPILDE

Funeral service for Floyd Allan Spilde, 98, Aberdeen will be 10:30 am, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating.  Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Floyd died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

The family prefers memorials to the Aberdeen Senior Center.

Floyd Allan Spilde was born on October 13, 1911 at Badger, SD to Edward and Louise (Marquardt) Spilde.  This is the area where he grew up and attended school.  He joined the US Marines and served during WWII.  He then attended college where he received his degree in education.  He taught in Watertown and Aberdeen.  He was Principal at Simmons and Henry Neill.  He touched many lives during his career in education. 

Floyd was a member of First United Methodist Church.  He loved fishing, hunting and being outdoors.  The farmer never left him totally as he loved the dirt and prided himself on his tomatoes.  His friends and family will miss his gentle spirit and his great sense of humor and kindness.

MARGUERITE HAUTH

Funeral services for Marguerite Hauth, 96, Pierre, and formerly of Columbia will be 2pm, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Craig Grams officiating.  Burial will be at St John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Columbia SD.  Marguerite died Friday, April 30, 2010 at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre SD.  Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-7 pm, Friday, May 7th.

Marguerite Fouts was born to Earl and Nellie (Watts) Fouts on the family farm during a blizzard near Houghton SD on January 17, 1914.  This is the area where she grew up and went to school.  She graduated from high school in Columbia SD in 1932.

In November of 1932, Marguerite married Otto Yeske Jr. at Columbia SD. To this union was added three children. The family farmed in rural Columbia until Otto passed away in 1961.  In 1963 Marguerite married Conrad “Connie” J. Hanson in Columbia SD.  The two enjoyed wintering in Arizona and Mexico. Connie passed away in November of 1976.  Marguerite continued her winter travels to the south where she met and married Wilfred “Red” Hauth.  The two purchased a home and made Arizona their permanent home.  Red passed away in December of 1990, and Marguerite continued to make Arizona her home until 2004 where she resided with daughter Lana in Pierre SD.

Marguerite was a talented seamstress and stitched the wedding gowns for her daughters and granddaughters.  She loved to dance, read, do crafts, fishing, golf and crossword puzzles.  She was also quite mechanically gifted and was known to fix her own faucets. Marguerite was a lifetime member of 4H, spending her adult years as a 4H leader and a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Ladies Aid.

Grateful for sharing Marguerite’s life are daughters Doris Krage of Madison WI and Lana (Joe) Hanson of Pierre SD, daughter-in-law Bonnie (Orv) Wiest of Aberdeen SD, Step-Daughters Yvonne Wahl, LaVila Hanson, and Carolyn (Allen) Jung, Step Sons Arlen (Ramona) Hanson and Thomas (Alice) Hanson, thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, one sister, three brothers and son Marvin Yeske, and step sons Robert and Jan Hanson and Ted Wahl.
